Welcome to the March 2005 edition. Winter is getting in its final licks here in the Montreal region with a few serious snowfalls to kick off the month. Just when we think the end of winter might be near, Mother Nature gets her revenge.

I have had a rough few weeks with a medical problem surfacing involving damage to the carotid artery in the left side of my neck. It could certainly have been a lot worse than it was, but the recovery period is long and tedious. It has also forced me to cancel my annual trip to the Winter SWL Festival in Kulpsville, Pennsylvania this month. I have attended the event for 16 consecutive years and it is a real setback to have to break my streak. I'd like to extend my best wishes to the organizers of the event and all those in attending next weekend. I look forward to seeing everyone again next year. You can read all about the weekend's events on the Winterfest website in the Radio Zone.

Our Monthly Special Zone for March features sites about St. Patrick's Day and the Ides of March. Also, the founder of Gonzo Journalism, Hunter S. Thompson, took his own life recently. We have some sites dedicated to one of my favourite writers.

Shameless Solicitation! Many of you will remember this item from last year. As may of you know, I am an avid birdwatcher. In early May (precise date to be determined), I will be participating in my 3rd annual Baillie Birdathon, a fund raiser organized by Canada's national bird conservation group, Bird Studies Canada in 1976.

More than 7,500 people from across Canada (and from several countries around the world) participated in and/or sponsored the event last May. During a 24-hour period, birders attempt to spot as many bird species as possible, supported by either flat rate, or "per-species" pledges from sponsors. More than $177,000 was raised in 2004 for bird research and conservation efforts. I was able to spot 76 species during last year's event and collected just over $1000.

Donations are tax deductible. Flat-rate pledges of any amount; $2, $5, $10, or more, are greatly appreciated, or you may opt for a "per-species" pledge. For example, if I were to spot 75 species, your pledge would be as follows:
@ $0.10 per species = $7.50;
@ $0.25 per species = $18.75;
@ $0.50 per species = $37.50;
@ $1.00 per species = $75.00, etc.

Your support last year was greatly appreciated. I hope that some of you may be able to help out again this year. Flat-rate pledge payments may be made, either by cash, cheque, Visa or Mastercard. The payments of "per-species" pledges obviously cannot be made until the final count of species seen for the Birdathon is determined.

If you have any questions about any of this, please feel free to contact me, either by e-mail, or by telephone at +1-450-671-3773. I have been able to provide all of you with this free information Newsletter 12 times per year, for over 7 years! This could be a simple and easy way to express your thanks.

If you would like to learn more about Bird Studies Canada, the Baillie Birdathon, and how your pledge money is used, please take the time to visit the following websites:

Thanks for allowing me to bend your ear on this special cause and interest of mine. Now, let's get on with this month's Newsletter.

The February Survey results

February's question was, What is your all-time favourite television show, past or present?

Believe it or not though, we received 23 responses with 23 different answers! The closest we came to having the same programme mentioned twice was one vote for the original Star Trek and one for Star Trek- The Next Generation. A lot of classic shows were mentioned, but only a few current shows.

The Ed Sullivan Show, Gene Autry, The Lone Ranger, All in the Family, Bewitched, The Honeymooners, Get Smart, The Twilight Zone, Perry Mason and Alf were some of the classics. The Trailer Park Boys, Corner Gas (both Canadian) were two of the current programmes mentioned.

The March Survey

Let's go from television to books this month. I mentioned that one of my favourite writers, Hunter S. Thompson, took his own life this past month. Our question is, Who is your favourite author?

Please send your response by e-mail to hfnewsletter@yahoo.com.

The Marx Brothers were perhaps the most influential comedy team of the 20th century. From small beginnings in the Bronx, they went on to conquer vaudeville, later Broadway, Hollywood and television. With their wild and unconventional humour, they inspired generations of comedians. This site tries to offer new material for the fans, but it should be fun for anyone just discovering their work.
