Welcome to the June 2004 edition. I extend a special welcome any new subscribers to the Newsletter. As usual, your contributions, as well as your comments, are always appreciated.

Well, we surveyed people on who they think the next U.S. President will be. Now we have a federal election coming up at the end of June. No doubt the media will be clogged with election campaign material for the next few weeks.

Update On Baillie Birdathon

I completed the 2004 Baillie Birdathon on May 12th, with a total of 76 species of birds seen over a 14-hour period. Best of all, I was able to raise over $1000 in pledges for Bird Studies Canada. I'd sincerely like to thank the eight Radio HF Internet Newsletter subscribers who stepped forward to support my cause. They are Dick Pearce of Guilford, Vermont; Brian Jeffrey of Carp, Ontario; Edward Janusz of Stonington, Connecticut; James Strader of Middleborough, Massachusetts; Ricky Leong of Brossard, Quebec; Howard Gontovnick of Laval, Quebec; and Janice and Steve Karlock of Dorval, Quebec. I truly appreciate your generosity and support.

Our Monthly Special Zone for June features the 60th anniversary of D-Day, Father's Day, and World Refugee Day. You'll find a list of other special events during the month of June listed in The Monthly Special Zone.

The May Survey results

Last month's survey question was: Who will win the November 2004 U.S. Presidential election? George Bush, John Kerry, or someone else?

Only 28 of you participated in the survey this month. The results are in:
John Kerry — 18 votes or 64.3%
George Bush — 10 votes or 35.7%

From my point of view, I hope this is somehow accurate.

The June Survey

Let's focus on the media and news coverage this month for our survey. We have many sources of news available to us: radio, television, newspaper, magazines, the Internet, etc. Certainly the Internet has made many of the standard news sources readily available to us. We have also been introduced to many new sources such as on-line news journals, e-zines, etc.

Our question this month is this: Which source of news do you personally find to be the most accurate and reliable?

It might be CNN, the BBC World Service, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the New York Times, USA Today, the Drudge Report, etc.

Please be very specific with the name and type of medium it is, (example: print, radio, TV, etc.)

Please send your response by e-mail to hfnewsletter@yahoo.com.

The new X-Sweeper is a near-field receiver with a graphical display that displays the near-field RF (analog only) in a spectrum format, allowing the user to rapidly observe all signals that are present, not just one single frequency at a time. Once a signal is received, the X Sweeper demodulates the FM audio through its built in speaker. With a frequency range of 30MHz – 3GHz, the X Sweeper can sweep and lock onto a broad range of frequencies in a matter of seconds. The 25 button keypad allows easy access to all functions, provides a direct numerical entry for the center frequency of the sweep range to be easily selected, and easily tunes to a specific frequency in VFO mode.

"No sails, no engines — just raw human energy." That's the mantra of these daring travelers, one Russian and a pair of Canadians, who have set their sights on a nine-month, man-powered odyssey to raise the profile of zero-emissions transportation. Come June, with only their bike pedals, skis, and rowboat oars to assist them, they will cross two continents and the treacherous Bering Strait, all the while chronicling their adventures and cultural encounters with photo galleries and a weblog. As Colin, Tim, and Olya see the journey, it's a fun and healthy way to demonstrate how everyday people can combat climate change. Their challenge to us is simple: If they can propel themselves across 11,000-plus miles on elbow grease alone, will you propel yourself to work or school?
