Welcome to the April 2004 edition. We particularly welcome any new subscribers to the Newsletter and invite everyone to participate by sending contributions for future editions of the Newsletter.

I hope that some nice weather is heading your way as we enter into spring here in the northern hemisphere. I'm kicking things off this month with something a little out of the ordinary!

Shameless Solicitation! As some of you may know I am actively involved in bird watching. It's great fun, challenging, and good exercise as well. In early May, I will be participating, for my second consecutive year, in the annual Baillie Birdathon, organized as a fund raiser by Canada's national bird conservation organization, Bird Studies Canada. More than 7,500 people from across Canada (and from several countries around the world) participated in and/or sponsored the event last May.

During a 24-hour period, birders attempt to spot as many bird species as possible, supported by either flat rate, or "per-species" pledges from sponsors. More than $194,000 was raised in 2003 for Bird Studies Canada.

Donations are tax deductible. Flat-rate pledges of any amount; $2, $5, $10, or more, are greatly appreciated, or you may opt for a "per-species" pledge. For example, if I were to spot 75 species, your pledge would be as follows:

@ $0.10 per species = $7.50
@ $0.25 per species = $18.75
@ $0.50 per species = $37.50
@ $1.00 per species = $75.00, etc.

Your support last year was great. If you were unable to pledge last year, I hope that you may be able to step forward to support me this year. Any amount would be greatly appreciated. Flat-rate pledge payments may be made at the time of the pledge, either by cash, cheque, Visa or Mastercard. The payments of "per-species" pledges obviously cannot be made until the final count of species seen for the Birdathon is determined.

If you have any questions about any of this, please feel free to contact me, either by e-mail, or by telephone at 450-671-3773. If you would like to learn more about Bird Studies Canada, the Baillie Birdathon, and how your pledge money is used, please take the time to visit the following websites.

Thanks for allowing me to bend your ear on this special cause and interest of mine.

Now back to the business at hand. Our Monthly Special Zone for April features sites about the Passover, Easter and Earth Day. Also, I would really like to draw your attention to one special site appearing in the General Zone this month. It is called "Ghost Town" and was submitted by David Guretski. It is a woman's photo-journal of a motorcycle ride through Chernobyl and the surrounding area. It is shocking, moving and breathtaking. Be sure to check it out.

The March Survey results

Last month's survey question was: What is your favourite magazine?

Thank you to the 24 people who took the time to respond. Only 3 magazines received multiple votes. They were:
Monitoring Times — 5 votes
QST Magazine — 2 votes
National Geographic — 2 votes

The April Survey

Let's look at a subject that we featured several years ago in the Survey section. The subject is hobbies, or pastimes. Most of us here have radio as a hobby, be it amateur radio, SWL/Dxing, scanning, etc., but let's find out what else you like to do. We have a lot of new subscribers since we last posed this question, so it should be quite interesting.

Our question is: Other than radio, what is your favourite hobby, leisure activity or pastime?

Please send your response by e-mail to hfnewsletter@yahoo.com.
