Welcome to the March 2004 edition. We particularly welcome any new subscribers to the Newsletter and invite everyone to participate by sending contributions for future editions of the Newsletter.

I'm looking forward to getting away for a few days next week as I make my 16th visit to the annual Winter SWL Festival in Kulpsville, Pennsylvania. I'll be joining about 200 other radio enthusiasts at the get-together. See what's going on by visiting the event's website. It's up first in this month's "Radio Zone." Hope to see some of you there.

I've decided to add a new Zone to the monthly Radio HF Newsletter. It includes a few interesting things going on each month that most of you might not know about. It will follow the Monthly Special Zone, and is called "The XXX (insert month) Zone." Enjoy.
[In the web edition it will be part of the Monthly Special Zone. — Ed.]

Our Monthly Special Zone for March features sites about the Ides of March, St. Patrick's Day and the Final Four-The NCAA Basketball Championship.

The February Survey results

Last month's survey question was: Will you (or have you already) purchase a digital broadcasting capable radio receiver?

Forty-one people responded to the question. 16 people said they either have already purchased a digital radio receiver or that they are planning to. The other 25 people seemed to feel quite strongly that digital radio was not for them and have no intentions of spending any money on it. A number of people complained about the lack of a standard system.

The March Survey

With the Internet providing access to thousands of newspapers, magazines, e-zines, from all over the world, we now have access to so much more news, information and entertainment. Our question this month relates specifically magazines; not just newsmagazines, but magazines of all types, on all subjects. What is your favourite magazine?

It can be one you actually purchase on the newsstand, or subscribe to, or it can be one you access through the Internet. If it is a non-mainstream publication that others may have never heard of, please tell us the subject matter, as well as the name. Also, if it is an on-line publication, please supply us with the URL link.

Please send your response by e-mail to hfnewsletter@yahoo.com.

"Boss Radio" was the name chosen to promote a new programming format on AM radio station KHJ, Los Angeles in May 1965. Although this all happened nearly 40 years ago, the introduction of the new format remains a rarity in the history of radio broadcasting because nothing quite like it has ever happened again. Since 1996, this site has been the most objective source for unique insider perspectives on the radio programming efforts of Bill Drake, Gene Chenault and others starting in California in the 1960s. This site is dedicated to the memory of Roger Christian, Robert W. Morgan, and The Real Don Steele, stars of 93/KHJ.

Universal Metropolis was founded in 1993 as an experiential resource for its founder, Spencer Ansley, better known on-line as Sea. UM has since dabbled in live events, music production and literature authoring, and embraced the Internet professionally in the late-1990s. Universal Metropolis currently operates several web media outlets, including a magazine, a radio station and numerous other side projects and features.
Great balls of fire! No, it's not images from Mars that have caught our fancy, but fiery portraits of our very own sun provided by NASA. That's right, as twin rovers romp around the red planet snapping up interplanetary postcards, the sun sends real-time greetings of its own in extreme UV imaging. What exactly is extreme UV light? It's the electromagnetic portion of the color spectrum between ultraviolet and X-ray that is not visible to the naked eye. UV imaging allows the volatile surface and textured weather patterns of our nearest and dearest hydrogen ball to be displayed without damaging our fragile peepers. Zoom, pan, and familiarize yourself with the surface of the sun, or take a look at detailed illustrations of its interior. Finally, don't miss movies of coronal mass ejections (aka magnetic blobs spewing from the sun's exterior), solar flares, and gigantic waves that roll over its surface. Why not soak up some sun?
