Welcome to the October 2003 edition. We welcome aboard a number of new subscribers this month from around the world. We're glad to have you on board.

The temperature is dropping into single digits overnight, the leaves are changing colours and the bird migration has begun, with several flocks of Canada geese passing overhead here. The autumn period is my favourite time of the year. It's great to get out and enjoy the crisp fall air. I hope that all is well in your part of the world.

Our Monthly Special Zone for October features sites on Canadian Thanksgiving, Columbus Day and Halloween. Remember that, generally, Halloween, and the days surrounding it, is one of the busiest periods of the year for pirate radio broadcasters. Be sure to check out all the usual "haunts" to hear what you can.

Important Notice
I wish to advise everybody of some changes at Radio H.F. I have a new URL for the Radio H.F. website and a new e-mail address to accompany it:

New Radio H.F. website: www3.sympatico.ca/radiohf/
New Radio H.F. e-mail: radiohf@sympatico.ca

The e-mail address for the Newsletter remains the same. The changes only affect my business, Radio H.F.

Also, many of you will be receiving a special e-mailing from me in a day or so. Several new radio publications are scheduled for release in October. I will be sending out a special pre-publication offer on these books, namely:
Passport to World Band Radio 2004
National Radio Club AM Radio Log 24th edition
FM Atlas 19th edition
ARRL 2004 Handbook 81st edition
ARRL 2004 Handbook CD-ROM
ARRL Antenna Book 20th edition

Special pre-publication prices will be made available initially to Canadian Newsletter subscribers. If you are in Canada and do not receive the special e-mailing, please let me know and I will send it to you.

If you are elsewhere in the world and would like to get a price quotation on these, or any other publications, please send me an e-mail to the Radio H.F. e-mail address radiohf@sympatico.ca.

As usual, we welcome any new subscribers to our group. We encourage you to participate by sending along a contribution or two for future editions of the Newsletter. Let's get down to business for this month.

The September Survey results

Well, I guess I need to keep the questions really simple. No less than 89 people responded to this question: How old are you? What do the results prove? They prove that our membership is pretty evenly spread out between 36 to 66+ years old. Here is the breakdown:
 a) 18 years old or under: 0
 b) 19 to 25 years old: 2
 c) 26 to 35 years old: 9
 d) 36 to 45 years old: 19
 e) 46 to 55 years old: 19
 f) 56 to 65 years old: 20
 g) 66 years old or older: 20

What else have we learned from this? It does please me to see that so many people 56 and over are actively involved in computers and the Internet. Given the popularity of the Internet and computers with the younger generation, it is a little surprising to see that we have so few people under 35 years old. Thanks to all of you for taking part.

The October Survey

Seeing that we all have computers, and due to the nature of this Newsletter, most of us are big fans of the Internet, let's look at the tools that we use to surf the Net. Our question this month is: What search engine do you use most frequently to search the Internet?

 a) AOL Search
 b) Alta Vista Search
 c) Copernic
 d) Google
 e) Lycos
 f) MSN Explorer
 g) Yahoo Search
The idea of OrcaLive is to relay live imagery and sound from cameras set up in the big, blue beyond. This site features webcams and underwater microphones placed off of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, allowing you to observe the movements of orcas using RealPlayer (300K or 56K). If the whales don't cross the path of the webcam while you're watching, check out the highlights from years past, thrilling moments that are sure to delight. Next, drop by the OrcaLab and learn about the day-to-day activities at the observatory.
