Welcome to Vol. 5 Number 01 of the Radio H.F. Internet Newsletter. Previous issues of this newsletter can be found at www.anarc.org/cidx/radiohf/ [right here! — Ed.].

Happy New Year! Welcome to the kick-off edition of our 5th year of publication. I hope everyone had a great holiday season. My birthday just passed on January 5th and as a result this issue of the Newsletter is being published and distributed on my brand new, high-speed computer. What a difference! It's just great. It makes surfing around through all the websites much easier.

My apologies for this edition getting out so late, but given the holiday period, and a number of other pressing deadline issues I had to meet, this was the earliest time I could get to it. Things should be back to normal next month.

This month's Monthly Special Zone features Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Also, January 26th is the big day for NFL football fans like myself. As a result, I have included the official site for the big game. My annual Superbowl party plans are already well under way.

The December Survey results

There was a drastic drop down to only 27 responses to last month's survey question. Pretty disappointing, but I guess the holidays had many of you busy with other things. Last month's question featured traveling. The question was: "Which country would you most like to visit?"

Only two countries received more than one vote. The winner, by a landslide, was Australia, with 10 votes. New Zealand came in a distant second with only 2 votes. A few interesting choices came up, including Egypt, Lebanon, Greenland and Siberia!

The January Survey

Let's have some fun with food this month. Here in Montreal, restaurants are a way of life. Visitors from around the world and locals alike rave about the quality and choice of food available. In fact, I saw an article indicating that a person in Montreal could eat 3 meals a day, in a different restaurant each time, and do so for 5 years, never eating in the same place twice! Our question, therefore, is this: "Which national cuisine is your favourite?"
Italian
Chinese
Japanese
Lebanese
Greek
Thai
Vietnamese
Indian
Mexican
Other (please specify)

Feel free to expand on this and tell us your favourite dish. Please send along your response by e-mail to hfnewsletter@yahoo.com.

The London Underground has ferried people under the city's streets for more than a century, and over time, about 40 stations have been abandoned. Hywel Williams, the creator of this site, explains there are two types of Tube lines: deep-level tubes, which use tunnels dug deep underground, and cut-and-cover lines, built by ripping up streets to install the subway. Williams has toured and photographed ghost stations on both types of lines, as well as unused tunnels connected to still-operating stations. The Aldwych branch of the Piccadilly Line doesn't see commuters anymore, but it's been used as a film and TV show location and is even featured in the "Tomb Raider" video game. Down Street Station was shut in 1932 but served as Winston Churchill's cabinet room early in WWII. The site even visits fictional Tube stops, such as Walford East from the popular British TV show East Enders and Vauxhall Cross featured in the James Bond movie Die Another Day. If you're visiting London, make sure to check out some of the ghost stations for yourself. And remember to mind the gap!
