Welcome to Vol. 4 Number 09 of the Radio H.F. Internet Newsletter. Previous issues of this newsletter can be found at www.anarc.org/cidx/radiohf/ [right here! — Ed.].

This month's edition is circulated, not by design, on the anniversary of one of the most horrific days in the history of our planet, certainly one of the most unbelievable days in my 48 years on this planet.

The Monthly Special Zone, for obvious reasons, features material and websites marking the first anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, DC. A memorial to a sad, black day in history.

I hope all of you have had the opportunity to mark the anniversary in your own special way. I am sure there are many of our thousand-plus subscribers who have been personally touched by the events of one year ago. The world has been scarred by the events of September 11. This month's Newsletter hopefully brings some unique, memorable and important views of events.

Welcome to many new subscribers this month. Please feel free to contribute to future editions. As well, your comments about the Newsletter are always appreciated.

The August Survey results

Thank you to the 49 people who took time to respond to last month's survey question. Again, somewhat surprising that with over 1000 different e-mail addresses receiving the Newsletter, only a small percentage of you are actually taking the time to respond and participate.

Last month's question dealt with your favourite radio format. We wanted to know which format you prefer to listen to on radio. Here are the choices, together with the votes received for each.

a) All News — 3 votes
b) Talk Radio — 7 votes
c) All Sports — 2 votes
d) New Rock Music — 1 vote
e) Classic Rock Music — 4 votes
f) Alternative Rock Music — 0 votes
g) Pop/Dance music — 1 vote
h) Easy Listening/Light Rock — 1 vote
i) Country — 3 votes
j) Jazz — 2 votes
k) Classical — 7 votes
l) Urban/Rap/Hip Hop — 0 votes
m) Public Radio (NPR/PRI/CBC etc.) — 15 votes
n) Campus/community — 0 votes
o) Christian/Religious — 0 votes
p) Other, specify — 3 votes, all for Oldies music

What can we learn from this? It seems we have a group of people, at least in the 49 who responded, who use radio for more serious reasons than just background noise. Public radio, talk radio and classical music are the top three categories. Interesting to see that these are three formats which often receive some of the lowest numbers of listeners in the various ratings surveys that are taken professionally. We must be a rather eccentric and highbrow group, don't you think?

The September Survey

This is the "Radio" HF Internet newsletter, but let's focus on television this month. I switched over to a satellite TV system from a cable TV service here in Montreal almost 2 years ago. This seems to be a growing trend in many areas. This month's question is, "Which method do you use to receive your television programming?"

a) Internal or external antenna
b) Cable, analog or digital
c) Satellite dish and receiver
d) Other (if there are others, please specify)
e) I don't have a television

Please send along your response by e-mail to hfnewsletter@yahoo.com.

The number of monthly contributors continues to be incredibly low. This month, excluding myself and Yahoo, we have only 7 contributors. Thank you to those 7 dedicated people. Now how about more of you. As I've said before, if everyone who gets this free Newsletter simply took the time to send along just one website that they think others in our group would be interested in, I would have enough material to last for months into the future. It's easy to do. I look forward to seeing more input from more of you in the future.

Memorials, tributes, news coverage of the day's first anniversary, plus the opportunity to create your own tribute through this website.

"On September 11, 2001, individuals and organizations around the world turned to the Internet to communicate, to find information, to support the stricken, and to express the inexpressible. We sent messages to loved ones far away. We read the news, looked at photographs, and exchanged opinions and condolences. We sent aid to the victims and supported the heroic rescue efforts that followed the attacks. The impact of September 11 will live forever in our memories. Now, on this first anniversary, we honor the heroes and remember the lives lost as we look forward in hope to a time of peace and healing."

Our aim in creating this collection of Web materials was to preserve the Web expressions of individual people, groups, the press and institutions from around the world, in the aftermath of the attacks in the U.S. on September 11, 2001. We hope the archive provides resources for many kinds of reflection on the meanings of these events.

Starting in the hours just after the attacks, until December 1, 2001, we collected Web materials that reflect responses to them, from as many sources as possible. People from around the world contributed URLs to be included in this collection, and we are grateful for each submission.

We are now in the process of cataloguing a portion of the archive, and exploring new ways of making sense of these archived materials. We welcome your feedback about how you use the archive, and suggestions for improving access to the archived materials

We are not in charge of the Flight 93 Memorial being planned by the Somerset County Commissioners. We are simply caring Americans who began establishing this website in mid-September of 2001, because we firmly believe that a memorial should be built at the crash site of United Airlines Flight 93 — near Shanksville, Pennsylvania — where 40 brave souls fought armed terrorists to save the lives of others and some unknown national landmark. We hope to further this goal by getting information to the public about the Flight 93 Memorial that is being planned. Not surprisingly, because what happened on Flight 93 was so profound, a multitude of memorials are being created for the heroes. These memorials are not being built with bricks, marble and glass, but with such items as a pen, a guitar, a camera or a website. We feel it is important to provide information about these other efforts to honor these heroes.

The first Viennese vegetable orchestra was founded in January of 1998. Since then, nine people who are active in various artistic areas have worked together on conceptualizing and carrying out this project: instruments are developed; compositions selected or created with particular value being placed on the plurality of the musical styles. The musical spectrum ranges from traditional African pieces to classical European concert music through to experimental electronic music. The instruments consist exclusively of vegetables although additional kitchen utensils such as knives or mixers are employed where necessary. This creates an autonomous and totally novel type of sound which cannot be compared with conventional sound conceptions. The preliminary work for practices and concerts is elaborate as all instruments must be bought and produced anew.
