Welcome to Vol. 4 Number 07 of the Radio H.F. Internet Newsletter. Previous issues of this newsletter can be found at www.anarc.org/cidx/radiohf/ [right here! — Ed.].

Welcome to the July 2002 edition. We are in the midst of summer weather here in the Montreal region. Lots of events going on to keep the locals busy, plus bringing many tourists to our city. The annual Jazz Festival has just been completed and we are now into the Nuits d'Afrique (African Nights) and the Just For Laughs comedy festivals. That will be followed by the International Film Festival shortly.

The Monthly Special Zone for July is empty. Due to getting this out late, I was unable to include the Canada Day and Fourth of July related sites. I do hope all our Canadian and U.S. subscribers celebrated their countries heartily this year.

Thanks to those who commented on the new layout of the Newsletter, with the ad spots interspersed with the general information in the Newsletter. We will continue to operate with the same format until further notice.

Welcome to a number of new subscribers again this month. I think you'll find some really interesting and fascinating material in this month's edition. Please feel free to send along some of your favourites for future editions. As well, your comments about the newsletter are always appreciated.

The June Survey results

I am extremely disappointed in the turnout for last month's survey question. I asked you to share with us your one, most favourite piece of radio equipment. With the Newsletter being distributed to well over 1000 e-mail addresses, you can imagine my disappointment when only 12 responses were received. Either people are just not interested in participating in the surveys, or you're just not even paying attention to the Newsletter at all. I don't know which it is, but needless to say, it is hardly worth the effort. Most likely every single one of you reading this owns a radio of some sort which you enjoy, but it's obviously not important enough to share with us.

With only 12 responses, and not one piece of equipment mentioned twice, it really is hardly worth publishing the responses. What I can say is that 8 of the 12 responses indicate that a shortwave receiver was their favourite piece of equipment; one listed an AM/FM only model; one listed a scanner; one an amateur radio transceiver and one other an audio accessory. We certainly can't draw too many conclusions from this meager response.

The July Survey

Let's try one more survey question this month. If it doesn't pan out, then this section will probably disappear from future editions.

We'll focus on the news this month. Almost everyone out there must check out the news, so there should be no reason for not participating in this one.

The survey question is: Which is your preferred method of obtaining news? Please choose one only, the one you use more often than the others. Please send your responses to the hfnewsletter@yahoo.com e-mail address. It only takes a few seconds, so please participate. Feel free to explain your preference, but it is not a necessity.

The Radio Free Brattleboro article sure surprised me. I built their first transmitter from a Ramsey kit several years ago. 973 solder connections and it worked the first time. Beginner's luck I guess."

We are pleased to announce the launch today of CBC/Radio-Canada's bilingual Archives Websites. Drawing upon 70 years of radio and television coverage from the archives of the CBC, the websites focus on significant moments in Canadian history. This bilingual project is funded by Canadian Heritage. There is no fee to access the websites. The CBC/Radio-Canada Archives websites are a chance to meet the newsmakers and experience the events of our history. Watch Terry Fox as he runs across Canada in his Marathon of Hope. Listen to a young Leonard Cohen talk of poetry. Relive the frenzy around Trudeaumania. The sites look at dozens of other topics, including The Gouzenko Affair, Africville, Hurricane Hazel, Thalidomide, Punk Rock, Maurice "Rocket" Richard, and the creation of Nunavut. New topics are being added on a regular basis. Topics found on the sites are organized by theme: Significant Historical Figures, War and Conflict, Arts and Entertainment, Politics and Economy, and Science and Technology, to name just a few. The Archives sites contain more than 1,000 original pages of documents with comments and analyses accompanied by hundreds of radio and TV clips.
