Welcome to Vol. 4 Number 01 of the Radio H.F. Internet Newsletter. Previous issues of this newsletter can be found at www.anarc.org/cidx/radiohf/ [right here! — Ed.].

Happy New Year everyone. I sincerely hope that you had an excellent holiday season. May 2002 bring you all the things you hope for.

This edition marks the beginning of Volume 4 of the Newsletter, meaning that we are entering our 4th year of publication. Requests for subscriptions continue to flow in, literally from around the world. When I sent out the first edition, back in February 1999, I never dreamed it would grow to what it has become today.

Volume 1 Number 01 contained only 11 websites. I don't remember just how many people it was sent to, but it certainly wasn't many. Today it is sent out to over 1200 e-mail addresses. Many of those are amateur, shortwave and scanner clubs whose webmasters, in turn, re-distribute the Newsletter to their members. There are also a number of webmasters who have posted a link to the Newsletter on their websites which have been featured in previous editions. So, honestly speaking, I really have no idea of the thousands of people who receive and use the Newsletter each month.

I thank everyone for your continued support as we enter the fourth year. I extend a special welcome to our new subscribers this month.

In this month's issue, we mark the return of the amateur radio hamfest/fleamarket calendar. The ham clubs are gearing up for an early start to the season here in Canada. My apologies to our subscribers outside Canada, but due to space requirements, I am unable to include events taking place outside of Canada, other than a few major national or international events.

So, let's get down to it. If you know of a friend or family member who you think would enjoy receiving the Newsletter each month, simply forward me their e-mail address and they will be immediately be added to the list.

In The Basics, you learn fundamental lessons and characteristics of broadcast news writing. Three different newscast formats are examined in The Styles. The Newsroom teaches you about creating an organized environment that allows you to be better prepared for stories.
The AM Window has for years referred to a set of frequencies on 75 meters (roughly 3870-3890 kHz) where AM amateur radio operation is prevalent. Since this website serves a similar purpose on the Internet, thus the name. Amplitude Modulation (AM) was once the main voice mode in amateur radio. Now it is a well regarded specialty within the hobby. AM offers a warm, rich audio quality that provides for more personal interaction. The simplicity of AM circuit design encourages hands-on restoration, modification and homebrew construction to an extent no longer found among contemporary radios. If you are interested in having fun with AM Radio, feel free to browse around this site. You'll find all kinds of information on favorite AM frequencies, nets, technical information, photos, a bulletin board, and even AM audio. Enjoy!

In 1919-20 Frank Conrad founded the broadcasting industry in a small red-brick garage behind his home on the borderline of Pittsburgh and Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania. With bare wires, crackling spark coils, and homemade vacuum tubes, Conrad pioneered what is today a 53 billion dollar-per-year industry (in the USA alone) that has become the world's primary source of news and entertainment.
Yet as the broadcasting industry has grown and prospered, the little garage where it all began has been neglected and forgotten. Today, while the workshops of more prominent inventors are preserved in museums, this "labor room" where the concept of modern communication was born may soon fall to the wrecking ball.
As the 80th anniversary of broadcasting has come and gone, a group of dedicated historians is determined to save the garage from demolition and restore and maintain it for future generations to enjoy. Our goal is eventually to make the garage the centerpiece of a National Museum of Broadcasting in Pittsburgh.

Welcome to the website of the Ohio State University Radio Observatory (OSURO) (also known as the Big Ear Radio Observatory). The Observatory is named after the Big Ear Radio Telescope (now demolished) — a Kraus-type radio telescope (named for Dr. John D. Kraus, the founder and director of the observatory, as well as designer and builder of the telescope). Big Ear covered an area larger than three football fields. The telescope was famous for discovering some of the most distant known objects in the universe, as well as for the "Wow!" Signal and the longest-running SETI (Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence) project entered into the Guinness Book of Records. This unique probe of the depths of the cosmos was located in Delaware, Ohio. The Observatory is now in the process of designing and building the next generation radio telescope, called "Argus," which will see in all directions at the same time.

How often have you found an on-line auction item that was so hideous you couldn't help but ask, "Who would buy that?" We have. A lot. So much so, in fact, that we couldn't keep our good fortune to ourselves. You see, here at "Who Would Buy That," we patrol the web's auction sites so you don't have to. We devote hours, sometimes even entire days of our lives to ferreting out the true gems among the trappings of our modern society. Whether it's that animatronic lawn Santa that frightened you as a child or the ubiquitous black velvet Elvis painting, we'll find it for you.

January 2002 Feature Product #1 — Heil Sound

In the 1980s, Heil Sound entered the Amateur Radio market to fix a problem that rotted the very core of the hobby: poor transmit audio. Because of his frustration with mushy, full range microphones, Bob Heil designed a series of products that have become the most valuable addition to any amateur radio operator: the Heil Mic element. The HC series microphones were designed for one purpose — communication. This revolutionary approach to communication microphones has changed the face of the amateur radio hobby forever. This goal is still the main focus of Heil Sound's mission: to hear the world better and to improve communication.

Heil Sound products are available through Radio H.F. To see the complete line of Heil products, please visit their website (www.heilsound.com/).

January 2002 Feature Product #2 — Completely new and updated book catalogue

Please note that many new books, publications, CD-ROMs, cassettes and software have been added to the already extensive catalog of publications available through Radio H.F.

You can view the catalog, completely updated for January 2002, by going to the publications section of the Radio H.F. website (www.total.net/~radiohf/), or go directly to the catalogue here at the Radio H.F.
