Disclaimer: The content and comments included in the websites featured in this newsletter are those of the individuals, groups or organizations responsible for each website. They do not necessarily represent those of the editor, unless specifically noted.

All subscribers' e-mail addresses are kept private and confidential, and will never be given or sold to any other organization. To have yourself added or removed from the distribution list of this newsletter, contact Sheldon by e-mail at hfnewsletter@yahoo.com.

Welcome to Vol. 3 Number 10 of the Radio H.F. Internet Newsletter. Previous issues of this newsletter can be found at www.anarc.org/cidx/radiohf/index.html [right here! -- Ed.].

As I finalize this month's edition on October 8th, U.S. and British forces have completed their first military incursions into Afghanistan. Events in the region, and the subsequent impact on the rest of the world are sure to follow swiftly.

As a result, in this month's edition, I have included numerous sites connected to these world events, including information on radio services, newspapers and wire services where you can obtain assorted and, in some instances, alternative news reports and opinions.

I have also included a special "September 11th Zone" focusing on the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in the United States. These dramatic events have shown how important radio and communications are to the world. Hopefully some of the resources featured here will be of assistance to you. I extend my best wishes to any of our subscribers who may have been personally effected by the events of September 11.

I thank everyone for their comments and appreciation for the two special editions which I circulated in September. These editions were distributed to media outlets in Canada and the U.S., and received much attention and additional exposure. As a result we have many new subscribers joining us this month. We welcome them all aboard. I look forward to your input and comments and contributions. They are most appreciated.

Best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving Day to all our Canadian subscribers and Happy Columbus Day to our American friends and, of course, Happy Halloween to everyone coming up at the end of this month.

To lighten the somewhat serious nature and tone of the Newsletter this month, our "Fun and Services Zone" features some material relating to Halloween.

Halloween, in the world of radio, is connected to a few things, pirate radio stations, and the famous "War of the World" radio broadcast of 1938. "The Radio Zone" has some sites related to both of these subjects. Enjoy!

So, let's get going with this month's information. Thank you to all the dedicated contributors for your input.

Important Notes:
With the world events of the last months, international voices on shortwave are even more important than before. Help keep those voices on the air by supporting these organizations.

The RCI (Radio Canada International) Action Committee (www.geocities.com/rciaction) continues its work to restore and secure the operations and services of Radio Canada International, Canada's voice to the world.

Also the Save the BBC World Service Coalition (www.savebbc.org) continues its work to attempt to bring BBC World Service shortwave programming back to the radio in North America and the Pacific regions.

We want to be sure that there is a solid historical record of this time. We are asking for volunteers to help us identify any websites or pages that have information or content about the Sepember 11 attack. We are especially interested in finding sites by individuals -- that record their feelings, experiences or opinions. We are also especially interested in finding non-American sites.

It is not the work of an academic department. It is the work of a community which felt it had to do something to make a difference. We study media and so this is what we had to contribute.

An excellent historical database of broadcasting information in Canada. I'll let the site describe itself -- "During the 20th century, Canadians have been at the forefront of communications. The 'roots' of nearly all electronic communication in today's world are here in Canada. From Marconi's first Trans-Atlantic message -- to Reginald Fessenden, the Canadian who invented the method and who in 1906 spoke the first words ever transmitted by wireless -- to Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone -- to XWA (CFCF) Montreal, one of the world's first radio stations (September 1919) -- to one of the world's first cable television system -- Canadians have always been leaders in the development of telecommunications. It is to these people that the Canadian Communications Foundation dedicates this project. This database has been assembled by the School of Radio and Television Arts at Ryerson Polytechnic University in association with the Canadian Communications Foundation."
