Welcome to Vol. 3 Number 05 of the Radio H.F.
Internet Newsletter. Previous issues of this newsletter can be found at www.anarc.org/cidx/radiohf/index.html [right here! -- Ed.].

Happy Mother's Day!

I think you'll really enjoy this month's edition. We have a great selection of websites covering a wide variety of subjects. I added a couple of sites to do with Mother's Day and one about May Day, a holiday not celebrated that much here in North America, but recognized much more overseas. There are some great old time radio sites, plus some excellent choices incorporating sights and sounds. I'm sure you'll find some unique and helpful information again in this issue.

Thanks to all the contributors. Without your input, this Newsletter does not exist. So, if you find something of interest on the Web, please send it along. Your comments on the Newsletter are also appreciated. The e-mail address for all contributions and comments is hfnewsletter@yahoo.com. Remember that contributors are entitled to a 2% discount on their next purchases from Radio H.F.

Please tell your friends about the Newsletter as well. If you know someone who would like to be on the distribution list, simply have them e-mail me with their request.

Be sure to check the amateur radio fleamarkets and hamfests calendar in the Publicity Zone, for events in your area. If your group has an event scheduled, please send me the details and I will gladly include the event on the list.

Let's get on with it. Warning! It's going to be a long one this time.

Tim Gerchmez, Renton, Washington: "Hi Sheldon, I have to admit a greatly diminished interest lately in radio and H.F. topics, having recently subscribed to broadband cable Internet access (the Net seems to be having a detrimental effect on the hobby in more ways than one). However, I still appreciate the newsletters, as they remind me the hobby still exists and should I find the time, my radios are still sitting there, waiting to be turned on. Thank you. I appreciate the time you take with the newsletter, and am sorry to hear you get so few responses. Please keep me subscribed, as I read about every second or third issue ... and especially appreciate the list of websites."

Stewart Mackenzie, Huntingdon Beach, California: "Just received your current edition. It was full of information and it amazes me just how much work you must put in this project. Keep up the good work for the hobby. Happy Easter Holiday!"

Dick Pearce, Brattleboro, Vermont: "Your HF Newsletter is super. I spent 2 hours there yesterday, printed 16 pages of references and am not done yet! Take care."

Geoff Geduld, Willowdale, Ontario: "Thanks for your, as usual, interesting and valuable newsletter. I have been a regular reader since Feb 2000 and keep it close by(!) for reference. Keep it going without changing anything - sorry you plan to drop question and website of the month. My only regret is that I can't remember all of the interesting looking sites which I have not bookmarked."

I wasn't sure where to put this entry; in the radio or in the general category. Any experienced shortwave listener will have been exposed to the sounds of over-the-horizon radar, perhaps the most famous, or infamous, being the Russian Woodpecker. The technology of the Cold War has been adapted for other uses. In this case, as the site indicates, "We need better ocean-monitoring systems to help us understand the ocean's role in shaping the world's weather and climate. NOAA works with the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy to exploit the unused ocean-monitoring capabilities of their Cold War early-warning radar systems. Our tests show that ground-based radars can remotely monitor ocean-surface winds and currents over data-sparse ocean areas that would otherwise require thousands of widely dispersed in-situ instruments. This page shows some results of those tests."

For post-war baby boomers -- remember the threat of attack by Soviet bombers during the height of the cold war? Civilians would be warned by siren if attack was imminent. Most of these air raid sirens were simply disposed of when they were rendered obsolete by more advanced warfare. One person on the US west coast decided to one such siren from the scrapper with the intent of restoring it.
Some say genius borders insanity. This tongue-and-cheek collection plumbs the alter egos of the world's great "artists," exploring the motivation and circumstances behind their masterpieces. We were equally shocked to find that the stark simplicity of Mark Rotko's "The Big Bruise" was inspired by a simple household accident. Of course, paintings such as "Whistler's Overbearing Mother" and "Genetically Engineered Pear" will be recognizable, but we don't recommend looking for these pieces in any museums.
