Introduction

Welcome to the first edition of this new on-line publication which will hopefully be issued monthly. Having recently entered the world of cyberspace, after some resistance, I have discovered that a wealth of information is available through the Internet, if you know where to look. Unfortunately, so much time can be spent looking that little is left for digesting and learning. One of the goals of this newsletter is to zero in on web sites which I hope will be of interest to you.

IMPORTANT: The distribution list of this newsletter is private. Should you wish to be removed from the distribution list, please inform me by e-mail at ve2shw@yahoo.com and your name will be immediately deleted.

There will be different categories, know as Zones, of information each month. With my main interest, as well as my business, being radio, there will be a section of sites related to radio known as the Radio Zone; all types including shortwave, amateur, scanning, both hobby and professionally related. The sites have all been chosen for their useful and unique content.

There will also be general interest sites, found in the General Zone. Some, but not all, will have radio related connections to them. The material will be varied, touching on different interests, subjects and specialties; some common, and some a little off-the-wall.

And, finally, you will find the Just for Fun Zone; novel, entertaining, and sometimes silly sites which, hopefully, will make you laugh and give you some enjoyment.

All this for free? Is there a catch? You bet there is! If I'm going to take the time to put this together each month, I am going to take the time to include some self-promotion and advertising, found in the Publicity Zone.

Each month I will include some information about Radio H.F., the major outlet in the Montreal region for radio equipment and accessories, covering shortwave, scanning, amateur radio, CB, etc. Radio H.F. also carries Canada's largest selection of radio books, including the complete catalogues of the American Radio Relay League, Radio Society of Great Britain, Radio Amateurs of Canada, Radio Amateurs du Québec Inc., plus many others.

Every month I will inform you of the Specials of the Month at Radio H.F. I will also highlight any new equipment or publications which have arrived at the shop. The advertisements will always appear at the end of the newsletter. Keep an eye on The Publicity Zone. In addition to the Radio H.F. promotion, I will remind you of other activities which I am involved in such as the Canadian International DX Club, my weekly radio broadcast, "The International Radio Report", on CKUT-FM Radio McGill in Montreal, and any other special events which I might be involved in.

So there you have what the Radio H.F. Internet Newsletter is all about. I would appreciate receiving your comments, by return e-mail, on the newsletter, its content and its future. You are encouraged to participate as well. If you have an interesting site which you would like to share with other readers, please send along a brief write up, as you see below. Keep it concise, but detailed enough. Be sure to include the CORRECT and COMPLETE website address, and be sure to credit your sources. I have yet to decide, but I may offer an incentive bonus to attract contributions, such as a discount on purchases at Radio H.F. to contributors whose material is used. More on that next time. The decision on what is, or is not, published is mine alone. One final note to our French speaking friends. I apologize, but due to time constraints, and my less than perfect command of written French, this newsletter will unfortunately be distributed in an English version only. That is, unless someone volunteers to translate it. Hint, hint.

Finally, please tell your friends about this newsletter. If there is someone you know who would like to be added to the distribution list, please have them send me their email address. The distribution list will be suppressed, the list will remain the property of Radio H.F. and myself, and will not be distributed to others. And I promise this long winded introduction will only appear this month, not every month.

So, time to get on with it. I have rambled on long enough. I hope you enjoy the premier issue of The Radio H.F. Internet Newsletter.

For the North American shortwave listener, this site is a must. Created and maintained by Daniel Sampson, it is designed to provide convenient listings of shortwave broadcasts targeting North America in the English language. Most importantly, the site is updated regularly. There are two main categories: English to North America by time; and English to North America by country. This second category also provides links to the shortwave stations' webpages, where available. There are also links to other sites of interest to the shortwave listener. Realizing that many shortwave listeners are news buffs, Mr. Sampson has added a link to the Reuters newswire service.

This new site, put on-line on January 26, 1999, is based in Richardson, Texas. It is dedicated to the collecting of radio station QSL (verification) cards. Presently the site showcases shortwave broadcast station QSLs. They have plans to add pirate cards in the future. There has also been some talk of a section dedicated to utility stations. Simply click on the country whose cards you would like to see and there they are. The webmaster is also welcoming input from other QSL collectors.
