It's difficult to believe that we're approaching the end of another year. The first snow of the season has fallen here in Montreal, but the feeling of the holidays is in the air. I hope your plans for the holidays are well under way. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our readers, wherever you may be around the world, the best for the holiday season. I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a happy, safe and healthy New Year 2005. There is big new on the Radio HF front this month. I am pleased to announce the debut of the brand new, and hopefully improved, Radio HF web page. Finally the all the Radio HF components, including an updated publications catalog, and the long awaited Nature Books division catalog are all included. You also have direct access to the Radio HF Internet Newsletter from the new site as well. I hope you will all take the time to visit it and get back to me with your comments. The URL for the new Radio HF site is: http://www.radiohf.ca This month's Monthly Special Zone will, of course, feature some sites relating to the upcoming holiday season, particularly Christmas, but also sites dealing with New Year, Human Rights Day, Week and Month, Kwanzaa and Chanukkah. *************************************************** CONTENTS THE MONTHLY SURVEY THE COMMENTS ZONE THE CONTRIBUTORS ZONE THE MONTHLY SPECIAL ZONE THE DECEMBER ZONE THE RADIO ZONE THE GENERAL ZONE THE FUN & SERVICES ZONE THE HAMFEST/FLEAMARKET AND SPECIAL EVENTS ZONE THE RESOURCES ZONE *************************************************** THE MONTHLY SURVEY LAST MONTH'S SURVEY We only had 13 responses to last month's survey question: "What is the number one item on your holiday gift list that you really, really wish Santa leaves under your tree?" We had an odd list for Santa, to say the least. Everything from a motorcycle, a computer and books, to a pepper mill, a wind indicator and a Labrador puppy! But everyone's number one wish, health and happiness. THIS MONTH'S SURVEY We should get a very good turnout for this one...hopefully! Each year, Time magazine chooses their "Person of the Year". It could be a politician, a business person, an entertainer, whoever; someone who made the most impact in the year. Our question this month: "Who is your choice for the "2004 Person of the Year 2004"? Please send your response, by e-mail, to hfnewsletter@yahoo.com **************************************************** THE COMMENTS ZONE David Guretzki, Caronport, Saskatchewan: I always enjoy scanning through your newsletter. I'm just sad I don't have enough time to look at every sight that you recommend! Ray Bauernhuber, Whitestone, New York: I must say thank you again not only for an excellent newsletter but particularly for your radio related web sites. They are so full of information and interesting facts that I can't say enough in praise of your work. Be well and 73's de DX ***************************************************** THE CONTRIBUTORS ZONE Just 9 contributors this month. Thanks to all our regulars for their continued support and efforts. To commemorate this time of year, the U.S. Census Bureau presents the following holiday- related facts and figures from its data warehouse. CHRISTMAS.COM http://www.christmas.com/ The world's largest Christmas Internet portal, this is the one-stop source for everything Christmas! We encourage you to celebrate the spirit of the holiday season, and enjoy the rich content throughout our website, with subsections on faith & spirituality, giving, planning & gift ideas, holiday fun, and Worldview, a look at Christmas around the world. NORAD TRACKS SANTA http://www.noradsanta.org/ We include this site every year. It is one of the most popular seasonal sites worldwide. Now marking its 50th year of tracking Santa's Christmas Eve voyage around the world, in six languages, NORAD is the bi-national American and Canadian military organization responsible for the aerospace defense of the United States and Canada. Get in on this site early on Christmas Eve. Its popularity is overwhelming. SCROOGE-LIKE XMAS PAGES http://d21c.com/wal9/xmas.html Had enough of it? Don't get into it at all? Well, you'll probably find something here to amuse you over the holidays! BOXING DAY http://www.web-holidays.com/boxing/ Details on the British influenced holiday, also celebrated in Canada and other commonwealth countries. THE OFFICIAL KWANZAA WEBSITE http://www.officialkwanzaawebsite.org/ Celebrated from December 26 to January 1, Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan-African holiday which celebrates family, community and culture. JUDAISM 101: CHANUKKAH http://www.jewfaq.org/holiday7.htm Chanukkah is probably one of the best known Jewish holidays, not because of any great religious significance, but because of its proximity to Christmas. Many non-Jews (and even many assimilated Jews!) think of this holiday as the Jewish Christmas, adopting many of the Christmas customs, such as elaborate gift-giving and decoration. It is bitterly ironic that this holiday, which has its roots in a revolution against assimilation and the suppression of Jewish religion, has become the most assimilated, secular holiday on our calendar. It does contain some Canadian repeaters, but it mostly shows US repeaters. CBC ARCHIVES http://archives.cbc.ca/index.asp?IDLan=1 VIA David Guretski, Caronport, Saskatchewan I saw this page on the CBC webpage. I thought it would be good for the Radio HF Newsletter. It contains archives of famous old audio and video clips, including Winston Churchill's "chicken speech", Trudeau's "Just watch me" interview and a piece of raw footage of a stare-off between an Oka warrior and a Canadian soldier during the Oka crisis. Images and articles are updated hourly, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Because it runs without human intervention, it reveals the most important issues of the moment -- free of bias, politics, and hidden agendas. Take ten for 10×10 and see what's happening now. ROGUE/SUSPECT ANTI-SPYWARE PRODUCTS & WEB SITES http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm VIA Elmer Standish, Courtenay, British Columbia "Rogue/Suspect" means that these products are of unknown, questionable, or dubious value as anti-spyware protection. Some of the products listed on this page simply do not provide proven, reliable anti-spyware protection. A very few of these products are either associated with known distributors of spyware/adware or have been known to install spyware/adware themselves. DON'T MIND ME http://www.dontmindme.com VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec This site began in 2000 under a different name, with a different attitude In reality, it was a personal rant site desperately pretending it was a humour magazine. Slowly over the last few years it has become a reasonable facsimile of the magazine that the editor had always envisioned. With an archive of hundreds of articles on every imagineable topic featuring several different authors, Dontmindme.com is no longer a personal rant page, but rather a source of thought-provoking humour and entertainment.
