To begin with, I hope you found the special edition of the Newsletter, dedicated to Hurricane Frances, helpful. September 2004 will certainly be a memorable month. Floridians will long remember the month for Hurricane Frances, and the fact is that the hurricane season is far from over. The terrorist horror in a school in Russia has had an impact on the world community. And, of course, we will all remember where we were three years ago on September 11, 2001. This month's Monthly Special Zone features some web sites dedicated to the memory of September 11. We also have a site about the International Day of Peace on September 21; something that certainly sounds like a wonderful idea given recent world developments. Finally, September marks the beginning of Autumn here. We have a site dedicated to the colours of autumn. *************************************************** CONTENTS THE MONTHLY SURVEY THE COMMENTS ZONE THE CONTRIBUTORS ZONE THE MONTHLY SPECIAL ZONE THE SEPTEMBER ZONE THE RADIO ZONE THE GENERAL ZONE THE FUN & SERVICES ZONE THE HAMFEST/FLEAMARKET AND SPECIAL EVENTS ZONE THE RESOURCES ZONE *************************************************** THE MONTHLY SURVEY LAST MONTH'S SURVEY Last month's question dealt with your interest, if any, in the Summer Olympic Games. The question was "Which sport(s) will you specifically tune in to watch during the 2004 Summer Olympics in Greece?" 23 people responded to the survey. Here are the results: 8 votes No interest at all 6 votes Track and Field events 3 votes Gymnastics 3 votes Swimming Other sports mentioned included weightlifting, soccer, rowing, beach volleyball, diving, tennis and basketball. THIS MONTH'S SURVEY Let's make the survey a little light-hearted this month. My wife and I have no children, but there are two other inhabitants of our home, namely Abbey and Nenagh, our two 8-year old Irish Setters. They are, without a doubt, members of the family. People tell us we talk about and treat these two just like kids! So, this month, tell us about your pets, if you have any. The question is "What pets do you have?" Please feel free to be specific (breed, name, etc.). Please send your response, by e-mail, to hfnewsletter@yahoo.com **************************************************** THE COMMENTS ZONE JOHN MCCOLMAN, Chester, Virginia: (On the Special Hurricane Edition) An excellent guide, Sheldon. Very well done. RAY BAUERNHUBER, Whitestone, New York: I'd like to particularly thank you for two internet links in the August Newsletter: the Radio Gold Index and Amateur Radio Resources. Very helpful and informative. ***************************************************** THE CONTRIBUTORS ZONE I have to say I'm really disappointed by the contribution rate this month. Besides myself and good old Elmer who we can count on every month, there were only two other contributors for this issue! OK, it's summer and you're outside enjoying life. Let's see if we can pick things up again with the coming of the fall season. Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec Fred Lesnick, Thunder Bay, Ontario Elmer Standish, Courtenay, British Columbia William Westenhaver, Montreal, Quebec Yahoo Weekly Picks ***************************************** THE MONTHLY SPECIAL ZONE SEPTEMBER 11 NEWS ARCHIVES http://www.september11news.com/ Sept. 11th archived news, photos, graphics, images, webs, and newspapers. News archives from September 11, 2001 and the years that followed 9/11/01. THE SEPTEMBER 11 DIGITAL ARCHIVE http://www.911da.org/ The September 11 Digital Archive uses electronic media to collect, preserve, and present the history of the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania and the public responses to them. Funded by a major grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and organized by the American Social History Project at the City University of New York Graduate Center and the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University, the Digital Archive will contribute to the on-going effort by historians and archivists to record and preserve the record of 9/11 by: collecting first-hand accounts of the 9/11 attacks and the aftermath (especially voices currently under-represented on the web), collecting and archiving emails and digital images growing out of these events, organizing and annotating the most important web-based resources on the subject, and developing materials to contextualize and teach about the events. THE 11 SEPTEMBER WAR ON TERROR PORTAL http://www.11-sept.org/ The War of Terror Portal was created out of our sense of helplessness after the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, a sense that we found we shared with millions of people not just in the U.S., but around the world. There were three things we all seemed to need: information, something to do, and some way to connect with others going through the same trauma. After the blood was given, after the cookies were delivered to the local firehouses, after the phone calls to loved ones were made, we still were left wanting to do more. And that is what this portal is for. This portal serves all those who are and who will be affected by the terrorist acts of September 11, 2001 and the subsequent war on terror. INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE http://www.internationaldayofpeace.org/ The United Nations has proposed a tangible goal that will help unite our global community and shift our consciousness. The world is joining together to create a Global Ceasefire and humanity's first day of peace in our homes, our communities and between nations on the International Day of Peace, Tuesday, September 21, 2004. FALL COLOUR IN THE EASTERN UNITED STATES http://ncnatural.com/fall-color/ One of the greatest shows in the natural world occurs yearly in the forests and fields of the eastern United States as prolific flowers, turning leaves and colorful creatures paint the Autumn landscape. Nature's annual autumn color festival is certainly one of the greatest shows on earth. Each fall, millions of trees in the eastern deciduous forests respond to the shorter days and cooler nights by beginning preparations for their dormant winter period. It is just business as usual for the trees, but for us, it is a spectacular display of the beauty and diversity of nature. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ THE SEPTEMBER ZONE Here are some of the events taking place in September: MONTHLY CELEBRATIONS Self-Improvement Month WEEKLY CELEBRATIONS 5-12 National Emergency Preparedness Week 13-17 Substitute Teacher Appreciation Week 18-26 Religious Freedom Week SPECIAL DAYS 4 Newspaper Carrier Day 6 Labor Day 8 International Literacy Day 11- Patriot Day (9/11 terrorist attack) 12- National Grandparents' Day 16 International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer 17 National POW/MIA Recognition Day 18- Wife Appreciation Day 21- International Day of Peace 22 Autumn (12:30 pm, EDT) ON THE LIGHTER SIDEÉ Subliminal Communication Month Source: http://groups.ucanr.org/espanol/calendario/ **************************************************** **RADIO H.F. THE MUSEUM OF UNNATURAL HISTORY http://unmuseum.mus.pa.us VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec The Museum of Unnatural Mystery is the brainchild of Lee Krystek. Mr. Krystek had for a long time wanted to build a museum that would explore the fringe edges of science and at the same time use those subjects to get people interested in the more mundane aspects of scientific work. A brick and mortar museum was far beyond his means, but the creation of the worldwide web provided a medium that was affordable enough for him to realize his dream. THE WITCHES' LEAGUE OF PUBLIC AWARENESS http://www.celticcrow.com/ VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec Welcome to the WLPA's web home. Here you will find a wide array of informational and community resources. From media reviews, to holiday and ritual ideas, to news on current Craft issues, the volunteers at the WLPA strive to gather together a variety of material for your perusal. For over a decade now, the WLPA has fought to dispel the misconceptions surrounding Witchcraft and Wicca. We continue to work with schools, government agencies, the media, and when the need arises, directly with the private sector. It is our belief that only through the education of the public at large that we can overcome the prejudice that to this day keeps some Witches in the "broom closet". As a subculture, we've come a long way, but we still have a long way to go. As long as there are Witches who are afraid to come out publicly, there will always be the need for organizations such as ours. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ THE HAMFEST/FLEAMARKET AND SPECIAL EVENTS ZONE Each month we list upcoming events, including hamfests, predominantly in Canada.
