These times probably see you out enjoying the weather rather than sitting at your computer, surfing the net. But, the Newsletter has become a monthly tradition for most of you. So here is a mid-summer sampling of web sites for you to enjoy. *************************************************** August is a quiet month for special events. Our Monthly Special Zone for August focuses on the 2004 Summer Olympics in Greece and the Olympic Games in General. You will also find a list of other special events during the month of August listed in The August Zone. *************************************************** CONTENTS THE MONTHLY SURVEY THE COMMENTS ZONE THE CONTRIBUTORS ZONE THE MONTHLY SPECIAL ZONE THE AUGUST ZONE THE RADIO ZONE THE GENERAL ZONE THE FUN & SERVICES ZONE THE HAMFEST/FLEAMARKET AND SPECIAL EVENTS ZONE THE RESOURCES ZONE *************************************************** THE MONTHLY SURVEY Our question from last month was "What world renowned event would you like to experience first hand?" We had only 11 responses to the question. The only event receiving more than one vote was the Olympic Games. Some other interesting responses included the Mardi Gras, the Rose Bowl Parade, a space walk, and Saddam Hussein's trial! THIS MONTH'S SURVEY With the world's attention focused on Greece, and the Olympic Games this month, unfortunately for more reasons that the athletics themselves, our question deals with the Games this month. I know that many of you may not be sports fans, but I find that come the Olympics, people invariably seem drawn to watch at least a few of the events, whether for the spectacle of the world event, national pride, or a genuine interest in specific sports. So, the survey question is this: Which sport(s) will you specifically tune in to watch during the 2004 Summer Olympics in Greece? Feel free to mention more than one. If you don't plan on watching any of the Olympics, let me know that too. Please send your response, by e-mail, to hfnewsletter@yahoo.com **************************************************** THE COMMENTS ZONE JEFF COVENTRY, Brisbane Australia: Thanks always for your mag; much appreciated. THE SECRET WIRELESS WAR - THE STORY OF MI6 COMMUNICATIONS -1939-1945 Possibly the most important UK wireless traffic in World War II was handled by a unit formed in 1938 as part of the communications division of Britain's Secret Intelligence Services (SIS). The Secret Wireless War offers a history of the SIS, its growing use of wireless in the 1930's, its involvement in the dissemination by wireless of Enigma (Ultra) intelligence, and a whole range of secret uses of wireless as part of the successful prosecution of the war. The Secret Wireless War documents the personal tales of those who were part of this most secret of units, and events that helped to win the war: secret agents abroad, wireless operators handling "Ultra" and agent's traffic, wireless engineers, interceptors, and administrators; the story of Churchill's personal wireless operator; a fleet of 70+ Packard motor cars and converted Dodge ambulances used as mobile wireless stations; and hams listening to the Abwehr (German secret service) and the Gestapo. This is an extraordinary story that includes hams among those patriots that undoubtedly helped the allied war effort. 194 illustrations including pictures of secret agent's wireless sets! 416 pages, high-quality paper, hardback.
