We particularly welcome any new subscribers to the Newsletter and invite everyone to participate by sending contributions for future editions of the Newsletter. I hope that some nice weather is heading your way as we enter into spring here in the northern hemisphere. I'm kicking things off this month with something a little out of the ordinary! ***************************************************** SHAMELESS SOLICITATION! As some of you may know I am actively involved in bird watching. It's great fun, challenging, and good exercise as well. In early May, I will be participating, for my second consecutive year, in the annual Baillie Birdathon, organized as a fund raiser by Canada's national bird conservation organization, Bird Studies Canada. More than 7,500 people from across Canada (and from several countries around the world) participated in and/or sponsored the event last May. During a 24-hour period, birders attempt to spot as many bird species as possible, supported by either flat rate, or "per-species" pledges from sponsors. More than $194,000 was raised in 2003 for Bird Studies Canada. Donations are tax deductible. Flat-rate pledges of any amount; $2, $5, $10, or more, are greatly appreciated, or you may opt for a "per-species" pledge. For example, if I were to spot 75 species, your pledge would be as follows: @ $0.10 per species = $7.50; @ $0.25 per species = $18.75; @ $0.50 per species = $37.50; @ $1.00 per species = $75.00, etc. Your support last year was great. If you were unable to pledge last year, I hope that you may be able to step forward to support me this year. Any amount would be greatly appreciated. Flat-rate pledge payments may be made at the time of the pledge, either by cash, cheque, VISA or MASTERCARD. The payments of "per-species" pledges obviously cannot be made until the final count of species seen for the Birdathon is determined. If you have any questions about any of this, please feel free to contact me, either by e-mail, or by telephone at 450-671-3773. If you would like to learn more about Bird Studies Canada, the Baillie Birdathon, and how your pledge money is used, please take the time to visit the following web pages. Our Monthly Special Zone for April features sites about the Passover, Easter and Earth Day. Also, I would really like to draw your attention to one special site appearing in the General Zone this month. It is called "Ghost Town" and was submitted by David Guretski. It is a woman's photo-journal of a motorcycle ride through Chernobyl and the surrounding area. It is shocking, moving and breathtaking. Be sure to check it out. *************************************************** CONTENTS THE MONTHLY SURVEY THE COMMENTS ZONE THE CONTRIBUTORS ZONE THE MONTHLY SPECIAL ZONE THE MARCH ZONE THE RADIO ZONE THE GENERAL ZONE THE FUN & SERVICES ZONE THE HAMFEST/FLEAMARKET AND SPECIAL EVENTS ZONE THE RESOURCES ZONE *************************************************** THE MONTHLY SURVEY Last month's survey question was: What is your favourite magazine? Thank you to the 24 people who took the time to respond. Only 3 magazines received multiple votes. They were: Monitoring Times -- 5 votes QST Magazine -- 2 votes National Geographic -- 2 votes THIS MONTH'S SURVEY Let's look at a subject that we featured several years ago in the Survey section. The subject is hobbies, or pastimes. Most of us here have radio as a hobby, be it amateur radio, SWL/Dxing, scanning, etc., but let's find out what else you like to do. We have a lot of new subscribers since we last posed this question, so it should be quite interesting. Our question is: (Other than radio), what is your favourite hobby, leisure activity or pastime? Please send your response, by e-mail, to hfnewsletter@yahoo.com **************************************************** THE COMMENTS ZONE None this month. ***************************************************** THE CONTRIBUTORS ZONE Thanks to our 9 contributors for the month of April. Web master Dan Sampson updates this page regularly. It now includes all the new summer period schedules, by time and by station, plus it offers direct links to broadcasters' own web pages. Excellent work, Dan! AM AND FM DXING RESOURCE http://www.amfmdx.net/ VIA Rich Toebe, via Glenn Hauser's DX Listening Digest The AM DX Resource is a list of links as well as original content, but covers various aspects of the hobby. SHORTWAVE.ORG.UK http://www.shortwave.org.uk/ VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec Find the latest loggings of shortwave stations from all four corners of the world. Use the links on the top to find your way around the latest shortwave loggings, the latest tropical band loggings and spotlights on various shortwave features. DX CENTRAL http://www.dx-central.com/ VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec After spending countless hours on the net "surfing" from site to site looking for various ham QSL managers, routes, direct addresses, etc., web master Kelly, W0VD, thought it would an interesting project to gather information from many place and "warehouse" this information on a single website; the site being much like a library. W8JI.COM http://www.w8ji.com/ VIA Rich Toebe, via Glenn Hauser's DX Listening Digest Information on antennas, including beverages, phased arrays, loops, verticals, slinkys, amplifiers, and more abounds at Tom Rauch's website. SURFING THE AETHER http://www.northwinds.net/bchris/index.htm VIA Rich Toebe, via Glenn Hauser's DX Listening Digest I stumbled across this website. It's a history of radio, of sorts, and is broken down into ten year time periods. The author also has a section where he highlights the parallels between the early days of radio and the beginnings of the Internet. Interesting stuff... SLOGANS OF RADIO STATIONS 1926-1932 http://members.aol.com/jeff1070/slogans.html VIA Rich Toebe, via Glenn Hauser's DX Listening Digest This page with slogans used by stations between 1926 and 1932 is interesting. Many of them are designed to give their call letters further meaning; some are designed to promote their town or business interests. My favourite is "The Biggest Little 10 watt Station in the World". Find this listing of "oldies but goodies" THE RADIO RANT http://theradiorant.conforums2.com/ VIA Ron Bickle, Amherst, Nova Scotia This forum is designed to encourage the free flow of comments and ideas pertaining to the radio industry, those who are employed in it, those who used to call the industry home, and those who are curious about it. The love of radio brings us all together. POWER LINE COMMUNICATIONS http://www.addx.de/plc/plc-video.php VIA Steve Coletti, New York, New York Power line communications, also known as BPL-Broadband over Power Lines is a technology that has already appeared in Europe. There is a probability of it being introduced in North America. Although this site is in German, you can still run and watch the 4 video clips demonstrating the interference and noise we can expect from this technology. It is very disburbing. CRYSTAL RADIO -- THE X-TAL SET SOCIETY http://www.midnightscience.com VIA Steven Coles, AM Radio DX Group An entire site about building crystal radio sets. The Society has been growing over the past ten years. The Xtal Set Society publishes a newsletter and numerous books, all of which you can find more information about on this site. HMCS COVERDALE http://webhome.idirect.com/~jproc/rrp/coverdale.html VIA Jerry Proc, Toronto, Ontario What started off as a simple task to try and identify a piece of WWII Direction Finding equipment resulted in some research and the net result is a document about HMCS Coverdale. Initially established as a war time, naval DF station near Moncton, New Brunswick, it later became part of Canada's Supplementary Radio Activities group, an oblique reference to intelligence collection, especially by radio. WARD-BECK SYSTEMS PRESERVATION SOCIETY http://www.kuzub.com/WBSPS/inside.htm VIA Ron Bickle, Amherst, Nova Scotia Ward-Beck consoles are used in almost every radio market in North America - this is a source for manuals, modules and parts for older W-B gear. Today MFJ offers thousands of products under such well-known names as Hy-Gain, Ameritron, Vectronics and Mirage, as well as MFJ. Their new 2004 catalog is now available in print, or on-line on their extensive website at: http://www.mfjenterprises.com/index.php All MFJ products are available through Radio HF. Unlike commercial catalogs, it is run by a loose confederation of volunteers, who compile pages of key links for particular areas in which they are expert; even though it isn't the biggest index of the web, the VL pages are widely recognized as being amongst the highest-quality guides to particular sections of the web. NOTE: Be sure to check out the Communications and Media section. GHOST TOWN http://www.angelfire.com/extreme4/kiddofspeed/ VIA David Guretski, Caronport, Saskatchewan This is an extremely moving and powerful web page. The page is a photo-diary of a Russian woman who rides her motorcycle through Chernobyl and the surrounding areas. Though her English is broken, the photos are eerie to say the least. SERCO TRANS-ARCTIC EXPEDITION http://www.sercotransarctic.com/home VIA Yahoo Weekly Picks Covering one man's quest to do something never before accomplished -- hike solo from Russia to Canada via the North Pole -- this site will document a journey that truly warrants the "extreme" label. Traversing 1,200 miles of treacherous frozen earth, Ben Saunders aims to cross the Arctic Ocean by himself on a pair of skis. You can read his dispatches as he waits for the right moment to begin his trek, pore over his biography, and peruse the over 300 pounds of equipment he'll haul on his heroic hike. There's also a place where you can wish Ben luck, and with temperatures dropping as low as -49Ľ F, he's going to need it. RECALLS http://www.recalls.gov/ VIA Elmer Standish, Courtenay, British Columbia To provide better service in alerting the American people to unsafe, hazardous or defective products, six federal agencies with vastly different jurisdictions have joined together to create this web page, a "one stop shop" for U.S. Government recalls. This site steps in to put names to the uncredited ad music that often leaves viewers scratching their heads and frantically searching out the songs indelibly etched in their memory. If you're plagued by questions about commercials and music, there's no better spot to discuss them than the lively forums. THE BAD FADS MUSEUM http://www.badfads.com/home.html VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec This site was created to take a fun and nostalgic look at fashions, collectibles, activities and events, which are cherished by some and ridiculed by others. WEB PAGES THAT SUCK http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/ VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec The purpose of this web site is to help people design effective and aesthetically pleasing web pages. My methodology is somewhat different. I believe that if someone is exposed to bad web page design they'll be less likely to use these techniques in the pages they create. A SHORT QUIZ http://www.dr-joe.net/quiz.html VIA Ed Muro, Cedarhurst, New York Take a minute and try this one out. You should get a laugh out of it. VANITY LICENSE PLATES http://www-chaos.umd.edu/misc/plates.html VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec This is a list of vanity plates from personal observations, people's submissions, and also from postings in the usenet newsgroup.
