We particularly welcome any new subscribers to the Newsletter and invite everyone to participate by sending contributions for future editions of the Newsletter. I'm looking forward to getting away for a few days next week as I make my 16th visit to the annual Winter SWL Festival in Kulpsville, Pennsylvania. I'll be joining about 200 other radio enthusiasts at the get-together. See what's going on by visiting the event's webpage. It's up first in this month's "Radio Zone". Hope to see some of you there. I've decided to add a new Zone to the monthly Radio HF Newsletter. It includes a few interesting things going on each month that most of you might not know about. It will follow the Monthly Special Zone, and is called "The XXX (Insert Month) Zone. Enjoy. Our Monthly Special Zone for March features sites about the Ides of March, St. Patrick's Day and the Final Four-The NCAA Basketball Championship, *************************************************** CONTENTS THE MONTHLY SURVEY THE COMMENTS ZONE THE CONTRIBUTORS ZONE THE MONTHLY SPECIAL ZONE THE MARCH ZONE THE RADIO ZONE THE GENERAL ZONE THE FUN & SERVICES ZONE THE HAMFEST/FLEAMARKET AND SPECIAL EVENTS ZONE THE RESOURCES ZONE *************************************************** THE MONTHLY SURVEY Last month's survey question was: Will you (or have you already) purchase a digital broadcasting capable radio receiver? 41 people responded to the question. 16 people said they either have already purchased a digital radio receiver or that they are planning to. The other 25 people seemed to feel quite strongly that digital radio was not for them and have no intentions of spending any money on it. A number of people complained about the lack of a standard system. THIS MONTH'S SURVEY With the Internet providing access to thousands of newspapers, magazines, e-zines, from all over the world, we now have access to so much more news, information and entertainment. Our question this month relates specifically magazines; not just newsmagazines, but magazines of all types, on all subjects. What is your favourite magazine? It can be one you actually purchase on the newsstand, or subscribe to, or it can be one you access through the Internet. If it is a non-mainstream publication that others may have never heard of, please tell us the subject matter, as well as the name. Also, if it is an on-line publication, please supply us with the URL link. Please send your response, by e-mail, to hfnewsletter@yahoo.com **************************************************** THE COMMENTS ZONE RAY BAUERNHUBER, Whitestone, New York: As a CIDX member residing in NY I must say that I thoroughly enjoy receiving both the hard copy "Messenger" and the electronic HF radio newsletter. TRACY YOUNG RADIO/TV PAGE http://www.tracyyoung.tv/ VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec An ambitious undertaking featuring information on radio, TV, satellite, scanners, Internet radio, old time radio, etc. CANADIAN SOCIETY FOR INDEPENDENT RADIO PRODUCTION http://www.radiosite.ca/ VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec The first organization in Canada to serve the needs of the all producers of radio programming, regardless of whether they are volunteer or professional. Members come from the entire spectrum of radio experiences -- campus/community, commercial, public and the CBC. Others are sound artists using old and new media as outlet of expression. CSIRP's goal is simple -- to connect the talents of radio and audio producers across the country and from around the world... enabling them to share ideas, learn new skills, and build a community of producers. THE CANADIAN VINTAGE RADIO SOCIETY http://www.canadianvintageradio.com/ VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec The Canadian Vintage Radio Society, and its bimonthly publication, Canadian Vintage Radios, is dedicated to the preservation, restoration, collection and enjoyment of antique radios and related items. Regular features include: start to finish restoration projects, biographies of famous Canadian radio personalities, regional reports on activities, technical discussions of specific radio repair problems, new product reviews, some radio-related historical fiction as well as classifieds ads and an up-to-date radio collectors events calendars. The Society also has a Yahoo Chat and Discussion group. OLD RADIO BROADCASTING EQUIPMENT & MEMORIES http://www.roger.beckwith.btinternet.co.uk/bh/menu.htm VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec On these pages are pictures of old BBC radio equipment and memories from the people who used it, edited by Roger Beckwith. BOSS RADIO FOREVER http://www.bossradioforever.com/ VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec "Boss Radio" was the name chosen to promote a new programming format on AM radio station KHJ, Los Angeles in May 1965. Although this all happened nearly 40 years ago, the introduction of the new format remains a rarity in the history of radio broadcasting because nothing quite like it has ever happened again. Since 1996, this site has been the most objective source for unique insider perspectives on the radio programming efforts of Bill Drake, Gene Chenault and others starting in California in the 1960s. This site is dedicated to the memory of Roger Christian, Robert W. Morgan, and The Real Don Steele, stars of 93/KHJ. WAYBACK OLD TIME RADIO http://wayback.net VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec A site for those who remember and those who are just discovering the great shows from radio's golden age. The purpose of these pages is to share a form of entertainment that has, sadly, passed into the shadows of history. The buttons on the right hand side will take you to information pages about some of the programs which Wayback has restored and encoded into mp3 format. The buttons on the left hand side will take you to other sites or information of interest to collectors of old time radio programs. GODFREY Ph.D. http://www.public.asu.edu/~chrisdon/research/index.html VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec Why is this in the "Radio Zone"? CAMP SHOHOLA COMMUNICATIONS & TECHNOLOGY CENTRE http://www.shohola.com/kd3fg/ VIA Ron Bickle, Amherst, Nova Scotia Tom Gibson, WA3HWY, has put together an incredible program of communications and technology related activities at this camp in the Poconos. Since 1972, more than 3600 boys have learned how to operate a broadcast console at Camp Shohola. Although they now use computers for production and audio editing, they still teach tape splicing, dubbing and multitracking techniques. Camp Shohola was the first summer camp to teach radio broadcasting and continues with the finest and most up to date instruction including: play by play sports broadcasting and news gathering using remote broadcasting equipment, weather forecasting, announcing, console operation and modern digital production techniques. RADIO INTELLIGENCER http://www.radiointel.com/ VIA Ricky Leong, Brossard, Quebec Of this site, Ulis Fleming, the webmaster says "The shortwave hobby has so many eccentric but yet intelligent people. It is either a global fraternity or dysfunctional family. I haven't figured out which. This is more than my home page but hopefully a tool for SWLs to use while tuning around. Russ K3PI, my Radio Amateur "elmer" from my childhood, and I hope to work up some reviews of radios and accessories. It is our goal to have fun with this. It's a great match! Russ is more interested in MW DXing and I have always been drawn to the world above 1700 kHz but not exceeding 30 MHz." UNIVERSAL METROPOLIS http://www.universalmetropolis.com VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec Universal Metropolis is a culmination of life expression through the Internet, web media and the arts, towards the inevitable state in which we're all one big planet. AOL PRESIDENT MATCH http://www.presidentmatch.com VIA Judy Grove & Rachel Baughn, Brasstown, North Carolina This is an interesting website...it allows you to take a "test", for lack of a better word, which identifies what is important to you and how you feel on political/world/socio-economic issues. NASA'S SUN-EARTH MEDIA VIEWER http://ds9.ssl.berkeley.edu/viewer/flash/flash.html VIA Yahoo Weekly Picks Great balls of fire! No, it's not images from Mars that have caught our fancy, but fiery portraits of our very own sun provided by NASA. That's right, as twin rovers romp around the red planet snapping up interplanetary postcards, the sun sends real-time greetings of its own in extreme UV imaging. What exactly is extreme UV light? It's the electromagnetic portion of the color spectrum between ultraviolet and X-ray that is not visible to the naked eye. UV imaging allows the volatile surface and textured weather patterns of our nearest and dearest hydrogen ball to be displayed without damaging our fragile peepers. Zoom, pan, and familiarize yourself with the surface of the sun, or take a look at detailed illustrations of its interior. Finally, don't miss movies of coronal mass ejections (aka magnetic blobs spewing from the sun's exterior), solar flares, and gigantic waves that roll over its surface. Why not soak up some sun? HEALTH FINDER http://www.healthfinder.gov/ VIA Elmer Standish, Courtenay, British Columbia The U.S. federal government has a great Web site that organizes lots of health information.
