Please note that all contributors of web sites used in the Radio H.F. Internet Newsletter are entitled to a 2% discount on their next purchase from Radio H.F. Please send along any material for the newsletter to: hfnewsletter@yahoo.com Welcome to the August 2003 edition. I know it's summer and people are doing lots of other things at this time of year but, over the last several months there has been a continuing spiral downward in the lack of participation by subscribers to this Newsletter. This month, we have basically hit rock bottom. If not for my own material this month, this would basically be an empty Newsletter. The explanations for the lack of input could be numerous. But, basically, what I think it comes down to is the fact that it is really easy to have material handed to you, free of charge, month after month, feeling that it will always be there. Someone else will send in something and the Newsletter will just keep appearing. I won't have to worry about it. Unfortunately, too many ventures end up following this same course. It comes down to one person making it happen, with the rest following along for the ride. I'd like each and every subscriber to evaluate the importance of this publication and to determine just what they are prepared to do to help with its survival. As I've said in the past, if each subscriber shared their most useful or most interesting website with us, I'd have enough material for the next few years! So far, few have picked up on the challenge. Sorry to sound so down, but half of the fun of putting this thing together each month has been the interaction with the subscribers; sharing material with other subscribers. If this thing evolves into pages of ME spoon-feeding everyone else, it will wear very thin, very quickly. So, time to give this some serious thought. On to this month's Newsletter. On August 6, 1945, a nuclear weapon was used for the first time in war when the US dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. In our Monthly Special Zone for August, we look at two sites dedicated to the memory of this dramatic event. THE MONTHLY SURVEY A very depressing 17 responses were received for last month's survey. The question was: If you could travel to any single major world attraction tomorrow, which one would you choose? Two locations received 2 votes each. All others were just one vote a piece. The Pyramids in Egypt and Australia's Great Barrier Reef tied for top spot. The Taj Mahal, Eiffel Tower, Grand Canyon, the Hermitage and Juno Beach each received one vote, together with a few other locations. THIS MONTH'S SURVEY If you could be anything you wanted to be in the world; hold any type of job or position that you wished, what would you be? Maybe an astronaut, a politician, a movie star, a professional athlete or an Olympian might be your thing. Please share with us all what you wish you could be. Please send your response, by e-mail, to hfnewsletter@yahoo.com CONTENTS THE COMMENTS ZONE THE CONTRIBUTORS ZONE THE MONTHLY SPECIAL ZONE THE RADIO ZONE THE GENERAL ZONE THE FUN & SERVICES ZONE THE HAMFEST/FLEAMARKET AND SPECIAL EVENTS ZONE THE RESOURCES ZONE THE COMMENTS ZONE ELMER STANDISH, Courtenay, British Columbia: I look forward to ever issue of the newsletter and think you do an excellent job; so, for that, I extend my sincere thanks. THE CONTRIBUTORS ZONE If the poor reaction to the survey wasn't depressing enough, how about this? Other than my own findings this month, we have a grand total of TWO other contributors. This is the lowest turnout in the history of this on-line publication. The future of this publication is going to come down to just how much you value its continuation. I can only put so much time and effort into this, and to see so little input and participation on the part of over 1200 subscribers, to say the least, is somewhat shocking. Thanks to those who made the effort and took the time to contribute this month. Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec Lee Reynolds, Lempster, New Hampshire Elmer Standish, Courtenay, British Columbia Yahoo Weekly Picks THE MONTHLY SPECIAL ZONE THE HIROSHIMA ARCHIVE http://www.lclark.edu/~history/HIROSHIMA/ Inspired by the photographic work "Hiroshima" by Japanese artist Hiromi Tsuchida, The Hiroshima Archive was originally set up to join the on-line effort made by many people all over the world to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the atomic bombing. The archive is intended to serve as a research and educational guide to those who want to gain and expand their knowledge of the atomic bombing. THE HIROSHIMA PEACE SITE http://www.pcf.city.hiroshima.jp/peacesite/indexE.html In 1949, an A-bomb materials display room (called A-bomb Memorial Hall) was opened to the public in the Hiroshima Central Community Hall. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and an accompanying building, Hiroshima Peace Memorial Hall, were opened in Peace Memorial Park in 1955. A group of volunteers called the Association to Support the Collection of A-bomb Materials (now the A-bomb Materials Preservation Association) and many other Hiroshima residents were instrumental in gathering A-bomb artifacts. The two buildings have been renovated several times to improve the exhibit itself, to provide peace studies facilities for school field trips, and for other improvements. The present Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum was opened in 1994, unifying the two buildings (now called the East and West buildings). The East Building traces Hiroshima's history, depicting conditions in Hiroshima just before and after the bombing. The West Building uses photographs and artifacts to convey the facts of the atomic bombing itself. Through its atomic bomb materials, Hiroshima intends to continue appealing to the approximately 1 million people from Japan and abroad who visit every year for the abolition of nuclear weapons and realization of genuine and lasting world peace. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ **RADIO H.F.
