Please send along any material for the newsletter to: hfnewsletter@yahoo.com Welcome to the April 2003 edition. The focus of the world's attention is squarely on the Middle East as the coalition forces continue to move deeper into Iraq, attempting to secure control of the country and drive the Saddam Hussein regime out of power. I want to thank everyone who took the time to contact me, thanking me for the Special Iraq War edition of the Newsletter sent out to everyone a few weeks ago. Those comments appear in the "Comments Zone" If you are a new subscriber and missed it, you can find it, together with all previous Newsletter editions, at the archive site mentioned above. There will be some additional war related sites in this month's "Special Zone" together with items relating to Passover, April 16; Easter, April 20; Earth Day, April 22; Eastern Orthodox Easter, April 27; and Holocaust Remembrance Day, April 29. THE MONTHLY SURVEY What a very strange reaction to last month's survey question. To refresh your memory, here is last month's question: What is your vice? Well, I guess you people are willing to share a lot with fellow subscribers to the Newsletter, but not when it comes to your personal vices! I think this was probably the lowest turnout every. I guess we have to stay away from matters of a personal nature. We had only 11 responses, including my own, and only two duplicate answers. Here are the results: Smoking -- 2 Pro Wrestling -- 2 1 each for Nascar, B-movies, hot curry, curling, CDs, women and tea. THIS MONTH'S SURVEY With everyone obviously to shy or embarrassed to participate in last month's survey, let's resort to a topic that not one single person in our group should have any hesitation about answering. Let's see if we can set a record for the number of responses this month. Millions upon millions of people, around the world, every single day, enjoy movies. This month's survey question is really quite simple. What is your all-time favourite movie? Everyone has one, I'm sure, so let's hear from you. This should be interesting, I hope, but then I thought last month's would be fun also. Please send your response, by e-mail, to hfnewsletter@yahoo.com CONTENTS THE COMMENTS ZONE THE CONTRIBUTORS ZONE THE MONTHLY SPECIAL ZONE THE RADIO ZONE THE GENERAL ZONE THE FUN & SERVICES ZONE THE HAMFEST/FLEAMARKET AND SPECIAL EVENTS ZONE THE RESOURCES ZONE THE COMMENTS ZONE JOHN T. PUBLICITY ZONE** THE DRAKE R-8B COMMUNICATIONS RECEIVER The choice of high-end tabletop communications receivers has diminished greatly over the past few years. It is our self-appointed task to take a long thin spike to the bloated egos of political, media and corporate Australia and to take clear black and white snap shots of the men and women who have their fingers in the till or who simply get paid too much for doing shoddy work. We will at all times try to have fun, respect the laws of our country in as far as they make sense and to fill the gaps the Australian media seem unable or unwilling to fulfill." SPACE WEATHER CANADA http://www.spaceweather.gc.ca VIA Richard Sim, Goose Bay, Labrador & Newfoundland The Canadian Space Weather Forecast Centre in Ottawa is operated by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), with support from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). It is a Regional Warning Centre (RWC) of the International Space Environment Service (ISES, formerly IUWDS). AIRCHIVE.COM http://www.airchive.com/ VIA Yahoo Weekly Picks From the glory days of jet travel through the mergers, recessions, and bankruptcies, something about airplanes continues to appeal to many. Plane-spotters will delight in the timetables, maps, and ads from over 30 mostly domestic airlines displayed on this high-flying ode to air travel. Site creator Chris Sloan recounts the tragic tale of Pan Am as well as that of the legendary TWA, which stopped flying after 75 years in the air travel business. Sloan also covers lesser-known regional carriers, such as St. Louis-based Ozark Airlines and sunny National Airlines. The three incarnations of Braniff between 1953 and 1992 get their due, alongside memorabilia from a few airlines still in the biz, such as American. Catch sight of flashy British tails at Heathrow and enjoy plane-spotting in Nepal. Don't miss the vintage and scrapped planes, including the very first Boeing 747 and a graveyard of decapitated, blind, and stripped planes. This site makes the skies look pretty friendly. AIR SHOWS http://www.airshows.org/ VIA John Collmer, Niles, Michigan A comprehensive schedule for air shows this season is available at the International Council of Air Shows web site. This site has (in excel format) a spreadsheet, which can be downloaded, listing the many air shows taking place this year. You will also learn more about air shows, conventions, and participate in an air shows message board. WARSHIPS 1 http://www.warships1.com VIA Alex Vegh, Beaconsfield, Quebec If you're interested in war ships, battleships and other sea vessels, this site is for you. You'll find lots of information and photographs of various war ships. THE TWO MICRON ALL SKY SURVEY http://www.ipac.caltech.edu/2mass/ VIA Elmer Standish, Courtenay, British Columbia It has been nearly 30 years since the last large-area near-infrared survey of the sky was carried out. The Two Micron Sky Survey (TMSS; Neugebauer & Leighton 1969) scanned 70% of the sky and detected ~5,700 celestial sources of infrared radiation. Since that time there has been a revolution in the development of infrared detector technology. New, large format, sensitive array detectors can now detect astronomical objects over 100 million times fainter than those detected in the TMSS. 2MASS has uniformly scanned the entire sky in three near-infrared bands to detect and characterize point sources brighter than about 1 mJy in each band, with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) greater than 10, using a pixel size of 2.0". This has achieved an 80,000-fold improvement in sensitivity relative to earlier surveys. THE PYONGYANG METRO http://www.pyongyang-metro.com/ VIA Yahoo Weekly Picks The closed society of North Korea has been in the spotlight lately due to plenty of sabre rattling from the bouffant-blessed Kim Jong Il. This glimpse into the metro system running under the city of Pyongyang provides an interesting look at a culture that remains largely invisible. The statistics section delves into the history and construction of the rail line -- describing secret government tunnels and stations that double as massive military bunkers. The maps and trains sections both offer educated guesses on how many stops there are and what types of trains are in service. You'll also see rare pictures of little-seen underground landmarks, including the "Great Leaders" who grace the inside of every train. At your final stop, you can "enjoy" the government-sanctioned music forcibly piped into each station. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ **RADIO H.F. It is divided into two main sections; the first is dedicated to the basics and is meant more for beginners, while the second is meant instead to be used as a reference. In reality many of the terms in the second section are still quite common; the first section was deliberately kept as short as possible.
