It has already been a very eventful month, what with the shuttle Columbia disaster, the U.S. perched on the edge of war with Iraq and ongoing conflicts in countries such as Venezuela, Cote d'Ivoire, and others. Hopefully a few of the items in this month's edition can help to take your mind off some of the serious matters facing our planet. This month's Monthly Special Zone features a few items about the shuttle accident, plus Black History Month and St. Valentine's Day, including the famous massacre. THE MONTHLY SURVEY Bring up the subject of food and you get an immediate reaction! Thanks to the 41 people who responded to last month's question that asked for your choice of favourite national cuisine. The choices again were: Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Lebanese, Greek, Thai, Vietnamese, Indian, Mexican, or other (please specify) The overwhelming number one choice, with 16 votes, was Italian. Chinese came in second with 5, Mexican and Japanese tied for third with 3 votes each, then Vietnamese, French, Indian, English and Thai with 2 votes each. Finally Canadian, Greek, Polish and Lebanese each received one vote. THIS MONTH'S SURVEY Let's go back to the subject of traveling this month. We discussed, a few months back, where in the world you would most like to travel. This time let's find out where you've already been. The question is this: How many different countries have you visited in your lifetime (including the one you live in)? a) 1 to 5 b) 6 to 10 c) 11 to 20 d) 21 to 30 e) 30 or more Feel free to tell us where, if you like, but it isn't compulsory. THE ST. VALENTINE'S MASSACRE http://www.btinternet.com/~dreklind/threetwo/valentine.htm With the age of telephone and radio communication dawning as it was during the Jazz Age, it spawned not only convenience for everyday life, but for the organising of crime syndicates as well. Chicago's bloody history during the Jazz Age, is a testimony to the failure of prohibition laws introduced in 1919. The St. Valentine's Day massacre is not noteworthy for its uniqueness of gangland murder, for these syndicate 'hits' were common throughout the 1920s, especially in Chicago. What makes the murders so special on this occasion was the effect it had on the entire Unites States public, and the outrage that followed emphatically pronounced that something had to be done. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ **RADIO H.F. We listen to the amazing "radio" sounds created by planet earth such as whistlers, chorus, tweeks, risers and hiss on simple VLF receivers. Listen to beautiful bird like sounds created by the northern lights while watching them at the same time; an oncoming solar flare impact our planet's ionosphere and magnetosphere live; distant lightning ring during night time hours. Study sprites and jets! Discuss VLF receiver designs. Become a member by sending a blank e-mail to (VLF_Group-subscribe@yahoogroups.com) The group currently has 278 members UHF-SATCOM http://www.uhf-satcom.com/uhfsatcom/index.htm VIA Alex Vegh, Beaconsfield, Quebec There has been a lot of activity on news groups and e-mail mirrors regarding satellite communications, be it UHF, Inmarsat, Skynet ,Luch ,USAxx and other interesting satellites. Searching the Internet for info on these types of satellites normally produces many WebPages, but they don't really offer much content for those of us with a more technical interest. This site aims to provide facts and easy to construct projects that will enable most relatively technical people to construct a good quality ground station for which ever type of satellite they are interested in. Douglass' extensive know-how in the field of military monitoring made him the subject of a Wired magazine article in addition to taped segments on NBC's Unsolved Mysteries, CBS News, and filmmaker Michael Moore's acclaimed TV Nation. He has also appeared in seven black project related TV shows that have aired on the Discovery and Learning Channels. In 1998 "Dreamland", author Philip Patton's exposé on Area 51 was released with an entire chapter devoted to Douglass. Douglass also helped Patton fact- check Dreamland. This guy is a Real Pro! I hope you share these images with everyone who would be interested in seeing a different view of our home.....The Universe. ONE WORD http://oneword.invisibleland.tv/ VIA Yahoo Weekly Picks This site's concept is amazingly simple -- it presents you with one word each day and asks you to write about it for 60 seconds. "That's it?" you ask. Well, it might not seem like much, but words like "tarnish," "reach," and "sin" often compel the writer to pen strange and obscure prose. After you've finished writing, make sure to see what others have shared -- it's an interesting lesson in writing and perception. VINTAGE VEGAS http://www.crecon.com/vintagevegas/ VIA Yahoo Weekly Picks Take a stroll down the Strip and look at casinos gone by with the help of relics carefully catalogued on this site. What's the best little souvenir from Las Vegas?; matchbooks, of course. These free mementos remind you of the Tropicana and its spectacular Folies Bergere or the excitement and luxury of the Riviera. Relive the Old West at the Boulder Club or indulge in tiki chic at Castaways. Or check out historic postcards for some more images from the past. The glittering neon of Fremont Street in the late 1940s is a classic, as is the image of Rat Pack-era Sands. The early '70s Stardust sparkles, and the Las Vegas Club of the early 1950s promises jackpots. Even though the vintage '60s Aladdin and '50s Moulin Rouge casinos are no more, their swanky style lives on. FERAL CHILDREN http://www.feralchildren.com/en/index.php VIA Yahoo Weekly Picks Ever since the legend of Romulus and Remus -- the twins, brought up by a she-wolf, who founded Rome -- people have been intrigued and fascinated by tales of children brought up by wild animals, away from normal human contact. This web site is intended to provide light reading for those with a passing interest in feral children, with references to other sites and published works that provide more thorough and academic treatments of the subject and the issues that it raises. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ **RADIO H.F. NAVEL MANIAC http://users.swing.be/navels/ VIA Yahoo Weekly Picks Is it possible to create a site that fetishises a part of the human anatomy without crossing the line into adult-oriented material? The answer from Belgium is a hearty "Yes!" Armed with nothing more than a digital camera and some gumption, the Navel Maniac patrols the streets of Brussels asking strangers if he can take pictures of their belly buttons. The resulting site is an ode to innies and outies alike, as we see a wide variety of very tastefully displayed navels. Some are pierced, some are pasty, and others are tanned and taut. This photo-laden devotion to all things bellybutton won't make your stomach turn. In fact, it will probably prompt you to ponder more than your own navel.
