Introduction to the Radio H.F. Internet Newsletter

Welcome to the on-line newsletter of Radio H.F., issued monthly, and distributed by e-mail to subscribers, free of charge.

I have discovered a wealth of information available through the Internet, if you know where to look. Unfortunately, so much time can be spent surfing that little time is left for digesting and learning. One of the goals of this newsletter is to narrow down your searching time, and to provide you with a monthly listing of sites which I feel will be interesting, informative and entertaining. The sites presented in each edition have been reviewed and are presented with a brief description of their content and/or subject matter.

Once the Newsletter is distributed by e-mail, it is then archived and made available in a web format here. The distribution list, now with over 1000 subscribers, is private and will not be given or sold to any other organization. Should you wish to be added to or removed from the distribution list, please inform me by e-mail at hfnewsletter@yahoo.com.

The Newsletter is broken down into categories, know as Zones. With my main interest, as well as my business, being radio, the first section will be a selection of sites related to radio and communications known as the Radio Zone. The focus will be on shortwave, amateur, scanning, Internet radio and other related subjects. The sites have all been chosen for their useful and unusual content.

The second category will be the General Zone. Some, but not all, sites will have a radio-related connection. The material will be varied, touching on different interests, subjects and specialties including electronics, computers, science, technology, astronomy, aeronautics, military, aerospace, etc.

The third section will be the Fun and Services Zone, made up of novel, entertaining, and sometimes silly sites which, hopefully, will make you laugh and give you some enjoyment. There will also be various reference- and service-related sites.

All this for free? Is there a catch? Yes, to a certain extent. If I'm going to take the time to put this together each month, I am going to take the time to include some self-promotion and advertising. This will appear in the Publicity Zone.

Each month I will include some information about Radio H.F., the major outlet in the Montreal region for radio equipment and accessories, covering shortwave, scanning, amateur radio, CB, etc. Radio H.F. also carries Canada's largest selection of radio books, including the complete catalogues of the American Radio Relay League, Radio Society of Great Britain, Radio Amateurs of Canada, Radio Amateurs du Quèbec Inc., plus many others.

Every month I will inform you of the specials of the month at Radio H.F. I will also highlight any new equipment or publications which have arrived at the shop. The advertisements appear at the end of the newsletter, or are scattered throughout. Keep an eye on the Publicity Zone.

The Special Events Zone lists upcoming radio-related events such as conferences, conventions and amateur radio fleamarkets and hamfests. And finally, the Resources Zone gives information on groups and activities which I am, or was, involved with, such as the Canadian International DX Club, the weekly radio broadcast The International Radio Report on CKUT-FM Radio McGill in Montreal, my bi-weekly "CIDX Report" on Radio Canada International's Maple Leaf Mailbag show.

So there you have what the Radio H.F. Internet Newsletter is all about. The Newsletter is as good as you make it. Everyone is encouraged to participate in and contribute to its success. If you have an interesting web site which you would like to share with other readers, please send along the URL, together with a brief summary of the site. Keep it concise, but detailed. Be sure to include the correct and complete website address, and be sure to credit your sources.

I will also add a Comments Zone each month which will include your comments about the Newsletter. You are encouraged to send in any comments, suggestions, questions or criticism.

As an incentive to encourage contributions to the Newsletter, anyone contributing material to an edition of the Newsletter will receive a 2% discount on their next purchase from Radio H.F. Contact Radio H.F. for complete details on this offer.

As editor and publisher of the Newsletter, the final decision on what sites are published is mine alone. A note to our French speaking friends: I apologize, but due to time constraints, and my less than perfect command of written French, this newsletter will be distributed in an English version only.

Please spread the word about the Radio H.F. Internet Newsletter. The distribution list is suppressed, and no one's e-mail address other than your own will appear on your copy of the Newsletter. All subscriber information remains the property of Radio H.F. and myself, and will not be distributed or shared with any other individual, group, business or organization.
