Introduction

      The Canadian International DX Club (CIDX), founded in 1962, is Canada's national general coverage radio club. CIDX is a volunteer staffed, not-for-profit organization serving the radio monitoring community. Membership in CIDX is open to radio enthusiasts around the world. CIDX members receive our monthly electronic newsletter, Messenger, which includes news and information on all aspects of radio. Your membership also entitles you to special pricing on major reference books such as the World Radio TV Handbook and Passport to World Band Radio. Members are encouraged to contribute material for publication in the Messenger. Learn more about radio by joining CIDX.

      CIDX is a member of ANARC (www.anarc.org), the Association of North American Radio Clubs.

Commemorating Canadian Radio Anniversaries

      You might think that CIDX has been around for a long time, since the club has been around for more than 45 years. But that is nothing compared to how old this hobby is. Two important dates in the history of radio that have a Canadian connection are:

1)  Reginald Aubrey Fessenden was a Canadian experimenter who didn't believe anyone when told that radio could not possibly transmit voice. On 23 December 1900 from Brant Rock, Massachusetts, he proved everyone else was wrong.

2)  Guglielmo Marconi arrived in St. John's Newfoundland in Nov. 1901 to see if a signal from Cornwall, England could be received over a long distance, beyond line-of-sight. He chose Signal Hill in St. John's because it is the point on the North American continent closest to Europe. On 11 Dec. 1901, the signal was heard, ushering in the era of long distance communications.

      Without these two pioneers, our hobby would not exist, so think of their work the next time you listen to a local radio station, pick up a weak DX station, or even watch TV.

English broadcasts to North America

      Need quick information on who is transmitting, when, and on what frequency? If you are in North America, or want to pick up English-language broadcasts aimed there, check out Dan Sampson's Prime Time Shortwave website (http://www.primetimeshortwave.com/). Dan, editor of one of the CIDX Messenger columns, maintains a listing of English-language broadcasts to North America, sorted and searchable by time, frequency, broadcaster, etc.

A special issue of the Radio H.F. Internet Newsletter on monitoring the Hurricane Isabel, which hit the east coast of North America in September of 2003.

Four club members spent a weekend chasing worldwide DX.

#9   Interruptable Feed-Back, 26 MHz transmissions, January 2002.

An update of Special feature #1. This feature lists 26 MHz signals picked up in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in 2000 and 2001.

#8   Shortwave under attack, June 2001.

Canadian, British, and Swiss broadcasters are all planning cutbacks to their shortwave and/or satellite services.

#7   CIDX 3rd Annual Listener Survey for the Fessenden Awards, February 2001.

All shortwave listeners, CIDX members and non-members alike, were invited to fill in and send in the CIDX 3rd Annual Listener Survey. All entries were entered into a draw, and one lucky entrant received a one year membership in CIDX (or a one year renewal for existing members). Deadline for entries was 10 February 2001, and the results are in. Thank you to all who participated.

#5   Glenn Hauser interview, Summer 1999.

On the occasion of the 1000th edition of Glenn's "World of Radio" broadcast, CIDX President Sheldon Harvey interviewed Glenn.

3.   Interviews with David Smith and Glenn Hauser.

Early in 1999, David Smith and Glenn Hauser were interviewed on the International Radio Report (see CIDX on the air for more information about the show) by Sheldon Harvey and Bill Westenhaver. Mr. Smith was with Radio Canada International, and is now with Radio Minurca of the Central African Republic. Mr. Hauser is the host/producer of the show World of Radio which is broadcast by a variety of stations, and also author of the "Shortwave/DX Report" in the CIDX Messenger. Note that this interview with Mr. Hauser is not the same as the one featured in the September 1999 Messenger, and reproduced on this website.

Each interview is almost 1/2 hour in length. An audio cassette copy of both these interviews (one on each side) is now available to CIDX members. Prices include shipping and taxes where applicable.
